The ones I saw at walmart and homedepot look like crap. I looked online and some some from a company called Dimplex that looks pretty real. Has anyone bought one of these? Do they look real? I don't want to be be embarrassed with some piece of crap that I bought online and can't return. Does anyone have any other companies to suggest? Thanks.

Answer
do electric fireplaces look real?...well they kind of do, but the better electric fireplaces are not going to be at a big box store, you really need to visit a specialty fireplace shop. Any shop worth its bricks will carry a good brand that looks more realistic.
Overall though you are not going to fool anyone that an electric fireplace is a real one. They are an aesthetic all their own.
Personally i like the look of them and they are easy to operate but they are not going to fool anybody into thinking they are real.

What is the most energy effecient portable heating fan?

me

I want one that heats well and will lower my energy bill

Answer
nergy efficient home heating - "Space Heater Reviews" by Sam Streubel

The portable space heaters reviewed in this article are electric radiant or convection space heaters, cost less than $100, and offer a maximum heat output of 1500 watts.

All of the following space heater suggestions are rated an average minimum of 4 out of 5 stars by consumer reviewers.

Radiant heaters work like the sun by warming people and objects. Radiant heaters without fans are not designed to heat an entire room, but excel at providing instant heat for one or two people.

Two examples of radiant heaters without fans are radiant heat panels and parabolic heaters.

Radiant heat panels are constructed with the heating element embedded in the panel. By virtue of their simplicity, they are safe, reliable and maintenance free.

The Presto Parabolic Heat Dish is a cost effective choice for workshops or garages when you want to heat just you and not the entire building.

The Cozy Legs radiant heat panel, with only 100 watts of heat output is by no means a whole room heater, but performs admirably when installed under a desk or hung on the wall to warm a bird cage.

The next four categories of radiant heaters are equipped with fans to provide whole room heat.
Quartz Infrared Heaters Quartz infrared heaters can cost as little as $50, or as much as $450 for the SunTwin or EdenPure heaters. The SunTwin brand features copper heat exchangers for consistent, non drying heat; a child and pet friendly cool to the touch exterior, fan assisted heat for larger spaces, and a lifetime washable filter.

The less expensive Marvin 1500 watt quartz heater uses replaceable quartz tubes in front of a reflector and a fan to project whole room heat. Quartz heating elements reduce positive ions in the air and consume very little oxygen. Reviews say this heater works extremely well. The security locked grill swings out for easy quartz tube replacement. Replacement tubes are readily available for $9.99 each.
Ceramic Heaters Ceramic heaters come in a wide variety of models: fixed, tower, oscillating and pedestal. One of the most popular and inexpensive of these is the Honeywell HZ-315. Weighing in at only 3.3 pounds, it's the mighty mite of space heaters capable of quickly heating small to mid-sized rooms.

A specialized version of the ceramic heater is the remote controlled Soleus Air MS-20A. The cool to the touch exterior, even heat, and wall mounting feature make it a favorite for nurseries.
Electric Fireplaces What are they? Expensive space heaters or a piece of furniture that also keeps you warm? Definitely a piece of furniture. If you went crazy and spent $2200 on an electric fireplace (they're out there), it still won't heat your room any better than the $299 model.
Electric Stoves Similar to the electric fireplace, an electric stove is a radiant, fan assisted space heater installed in a decorative housing. The most popular model by far with consumers is the Dimplex CS3311 compact electric stove.

You can continue to read the reviews for convection heaters, micathermic heaters and oil filled radiators at Sam's Guide to Small Heaters.

What is the average cost of living in Tacoma, Wa?

Chelsea

Just to give you enough to go on, I'm a college student, nineteen, and looking for a studio apartment in Tacoma. I'm trying to figure out if moving out is even in the realm of possibility. My questions are:
What is the average water/electric/gas bill for this area? I've tried looking it up and just can't find the information I'm looking for.

I'm looking up the bus system information as well but if anyone who answers this happens to know off hand how much that is, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm also looking at internet services/phone services too.

Any other expenses I might not have thought of? I've looked into the apartment situation/deposit so I don't think I need information on those.

Answer
Here are some examples for you. I don't live in an apartment but you'll get some idea of costs to compare to.

For a 2400 square foot house:

1. Water - includes water + sewer, and costs me about $110 every two months.
2. Gas - used for hot water heater, gas fireplace in winter and furnace - $30 in summer, $200 in winter
My October bill was $60
3. Electricity - not used for heat, no air conditioner. Usually about $50 per month

Other costs - Internet + phone runs about $70 per month - with discounts when you sign up. Cable TV is about the same. Trash (if not included with your apartment) is usually about $35 per month.

Costs for a small apartment will be much less. Many apartments have trash and water included in the rent.

Tacoma is Pierce County Transit - $2 per ride or $72 per month.
Details here:
http://www.piercetransit.org/fares/

Pierce County Transit also connects with the other nearby transit agencies for travel into Seattle or Olympia. Those costs are additional.

What setting do you leave your thermostat on in the winter?

Jenn M

My husband and I have an ongoing disagreement... I want the heat on seventy during the day (we have an infant and a two year old and I am a stay at home mother) and sixty eight at night. He wants it on 65 day and night. So I would like to take an informal poll to see what is the average heat setting in the winter.

Answer
73 Day
72 Night

Live in VA.

Went as high as 75 during the 10 degree days/nights.

Did you know the average rate you pay for gas goes down the more you use? Not to say your bill goes down, but the point is, a 1 to 2 degree increase may actually cost you a lot less money than you think.

Look close at your next bill. Works the same for electric.

Incidently, we also run a gas fireplace sometimes too.

My house is 3000 sq. ft. and it cost $300 to heat it with natural gas in December. How does that compare to you? Our furnace is brand new and 94 percent efficient.

What is the most realistic looking electric fireplace?

ndsino

I know there are many types of fireplaces, but I'd like to find the most realistic electric fireplace I can. I don't want it for the heat -- just for the look. We live in a warm area, so really don't need the warmth of the fire. I also have a budget of less than $1000. What would you recommend?
I should also add that we prefer a more classic look rather than a modern, trendy look. You know, something like you'd see in an old living room all decked out for Christmas -- stockings hung on it, etc.

Answer
Cool summer evenings, crisp autumn mornings, and winter's many frosty days provide perfect opportunities to cozy up with Dimplex's traditional-style electric fireplace. Featuring a roomy 20-inch firebox opening, realistic glowing logs, and a patented 3D flame feature, this handsome room accent creates an elegant fire look without the dangers of smoke, an open flame, propane, or gas emissions. The unit's fan-forced heater distributes heat quickly and evenly throughout the room, while its thermostat control makes it easy to maintain personal comfort levels. The fireplace can also provide a glowing fire without the heat for visual enjoyment year-round. Concealed controls provide a clean look and the included remote control allows for easy adjustments without having to leave that perfect spot on the sofa. Classic in design, the fireplace offers a rich burnished walnut finish, graceful embellished molding, and a generous mantel for photographs, vases, or other personal touches. It measures a space-efficient 36-3/4 inches wide by 36 inches high by 11-3/4 inches deep to fit nicely into rooms large and small.

Heating in our house is starting to get unaffordable for us. Does anyone have an Electric Fireplace in their Bedroom? Does it keep you warm at night?
Which would you recommend, electric or Fuel?
It says it uses as much Electricity as a Coffee Machine.

Answer
Having an electric fire is your bathroom would be against building regulations as electricity and water don't mix, your best option is an oil filled towel heater. I installed one last winter and left it on all the time as once they are hot they do not use much power and it kept the whole upstairs at a reasonable temperature.
Gas or coal is always cheaper than electric for all other fires, I bought my electric fires from http://www.directfiresonline.co.uk they were really helpful advising me on which ones to buy as they have different power outputs and they also got me my bathroom heater even though they don't stock them!

I'm interested in what you would consider to be the least expensive tricks to saving energy?

electric fireplaces 3 sided on Heatilator fireplaces, wood, gas, electric
electric fireplaces 3 sided image

Jim Robles

Any ideas are more then welcome.

Answer
â¢Caulk windows, doors and anywhere air leaks in or out. Do not caulk around water heater and furnace exhaust pipes.
â¢Weather-strip around windows and doors.
â¢Wrap heating and cooling ducts with duct wrap, or use mastic sealant.
â¢Install energy-saver shower heads.
â¢Set the furnace thermostat at 68 degrees or lower, and the air-conditioner thermostat at 78 degrees or higher, health permitting. 3 percent to 5 percent more energy is used for each degree the furnace is set above 68 degrees and for each degree the air conditioner is set below 78 degrees.
â¢Use compact fluorescent lamps. You can lower your lighting bill by converting to energy-efficient low-wattage compact fluorescent lighting and fixtures.
â¢Clean or replace furnace and air-conditioner filters regularly, following manufacturer's instructions.
â¢Set the water heater thermostat at 140 degrees or "normal." If you have a dishwasher. Otherwise, set it at 120 degrees or "low." Check your dishwasher to see if you can use 120 degree water. Follow the manufacturer's direction on yearly maintenance to extend the life of your unit.
â¢Fix defective plumbing or dripping faucets. A single dripping hot water faucet can waste 212 gallons of water a month. That not only increases water bills, but also increases the gas or electric bill for heating the water.
â¢Wash only full loads in a dishwasher and use the shortest cycle that will get your dishes clean. If operating instructions allow, turn off the dishwasher before the drying cycle, open the door and let the dishes dry naturally.
â¢Defrost refrigerators and freezers before ice buildup becomes 1/4-inch thick.
â¢Install shades, awnings or sunscreens on windows facing south and/or west to block summer light. In winter, open shades on sunny days to help warm rooms.
â¢Close the damper when the fireplace is not being used. Try not to use the fireplace and central heating system at the same time.
In cold Weather:
â¢Close your curtains and shades at night; open them during the day.
â¢Keep windows on the south side of your house clean to let in the winter sun.
In warm weather:
â¢Install white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house.
â¢Close curtains on south- and west-facing windows during the day.

What to do if an earthquake happens?

Yasi

The earth is kind of always shaky in Puerto Rico but sometimes like today the earth shakes real long and it gets scary. And it hit me, I don't know what to do if a big angry earthquake ever happens.

Answer
little knowledge and a few precautionary measures can enormously increase your chances of surviving an earthquake - or any other type of hazard. The keys are education and preparing in advance. The earthquake safety tips below will not make you an expert. However, they could make a life-saving difference if you find yourself in an earthquake situation. Invest in your personal safety by studying below.

Before the Earthquake:
Learn how to survive during the ground motion. This is described in the "During the Earthquake" section below. The earthquake safety tips there will prepare you for the fast action needed - most earthquakes are over in seconds so knowing what to do instinctively is very important.
Teach all members of your family about earthquake safety. This includes: 1) the actions you should take when an earthquake occurs, 2) the safe places in a room such as under a strong desk, along interior walls, and 3) places to avoid such as near windows, large mirrors, hanging objects, heavy furniture and fireplaces.
Stock up on emergency supplies. These include: battery operated radio (and extra batteries), flashlights (and extra batteries), first aid kit, bottled water, two weeks food and medical supplies, blankets, cooking fuel, tools needed to turn off your gas, water and electric utilities.
Arrange your home for safety: Store heavy objects on lower shelves and store breakable objects in cabnents with latched doors. Don't hang heavy mirrors or pictures above where people frequently sit or sleep.
Anchor heavy appliances and furniture such as water heaters, refrigerators and bookcases.
Store flamable liquids away from potential ignition sources such as water heaters, stoves and furnaces.
Get Educated. Learn what to do during an earthquake (see below). Then you will be ready for the fast action needed. Make sure that all members of your family have this important education.
Learn where the main turn-offs are for your water, gas and electricity. Know how to turn them off and the location of any needed tools.

During the Earthquake:
If you are indoors, stay there. Quickly move to a safe location in the room such as under a strong desk, a strong table, or along an interior wall. The goal is to protect yourself from falling objects and be located near the structural strong points of the room. Avoid taking cover near windows, large mirrors, hanging objects, heavy furniture, heavy appliances or fireplaces.
If you are cooking, turn off the stove and take cover.
If you are outdoors, move to an open area where falling objects are unlikely to strike you. Move away from buildings, powerlines and trees.
If you are driving, slow down smoothly and stop on the side of the road. Avoid stopping on or under bridges and overpasses, or under power lines, trees and large signs. Stay in your car.
After the Earthquake:
Check for injuries, attend to injuries if needed, help ensure the safety of people around you.
Check for damage. If your building is badly damaged you should leave it until it has been inspected by a safety professional.
If you smell or hear a gas leak, get everyone outside and open windows and doors. If you can do it safely, turn off the gas at the meter. Report the leak to the gas company and fire department. Do not use any electrical appliances because a tiny spark could ignite the gas.
If the power is out, unplug major appliances to prevent possible damage when the power is turned back on. If you see sparks, frayed wires, or smell hot insulation turn off electricity at the main fuse box or breaker. If you will have to step in water to turn off the electricity you should call a professional to turn it off for you.

I live in a house it was built about 50 years ago. It's beat up and chipping paint on the outside, on the inside everything is its original state, except the bathroom and kitchen. But the kitchens linoleum is torn up all over, the wall paper is peeling. The walls are like "chalky" feeling every wall in the living room an hallway area is a eggshell white Thats been yellowed by the cigarette smoke. My basement is huge and fully modeled into a bar and lounge, though the carpet is bright red and the walls are a half and half . Half is ugly, bare black wood and red rocking horses tea cups and cologne prints on it. Every door in my house is a flat light brown door with handles that are a metallic gold color but have been worn down so only some of its the metallic color is showing. My bathroom is awesome except it has a huge tub with jets but its only probably a 6 x 8 ft room. The only room that's painted is mine, and the outside oh boy, in the back theres a broken snowmobile, old bikes and some of my dads yard work tools, my dad has a shop in the garage he does parts for cars and machinery on a lathe and mill. The metal gets EVERYWHERE, and we have two cats. They smell up the whole entire basement with ammonia smelling cat urine. We clean the litter boxes almost 6 times a week and they reek ! My mom says we can't get rid of them. The cats get fur all over the floors, and the scratch stuff. We don't really have a lot of money but we have nice new furniture bought two years ago, a huge 55" television, a fire place thing that we got about 6 months ago its an electric heater "fireplace" we have nice things, its just... My actual house sucks. My mom cleans but she's tired when she gets home so she only does dishes and clears the table for dinner. I sometimes sweep and dust all the cobwebs when I'm tired of it being dirty. And another thing, all my friends have uggs and huge houses and iPhones and electronics and 10k things for Xmas. I get like 10 cheap things...:( please help

Answer
Well I'm sure you could do extra cleaning too. Just put some music on snd get to cleaning!
Don't be emberassed. Theyre just things. Dont be materialistic.
Who cares how your house looks? I'm sure your friends don't. And if they do, they aren't ur friends.

lowering my heating bill?

kittyblue7

Would my bill be lower if I put an electric heater upstairs (in the hall way) and turned on the fireplace in the living room (gas fireplace, pretty much heats up the whole downstairs) and turned down the thermostat to 55 or completely off?

Answer
We heat our home using a Gas Pack downstairs and a new high efficiency Heat Pump upstairs. We also use 2 "Lasko" 1500 watt rotating ceramic air heaters (remote controlled).

I also installed an additional layer (without vapor barrier) of insulation with a high "R" rating in the attic on top of the original layer of insulation.

The combination of these items has lowered our monthly heating cost (NC).

Note: As long as the thermostat is set lower than the temperature maintained in your home by your fireplace the other heat system should not come on.

Q. who has one and how did you decide on the right one?

Answer
I got one last year at Costco's. I had wanted a fireplace for a long time but since a real one was out of the question I got an electric one. It also has a heater in it that blows out hot air. It was a good price and I didn't have to buy the mantel piece seprately(like I would have had to if I went to Lowe's)the whole thing came together. Its a nice cherrywood and it looks good with my x-mas stockings hanging on it. I like the look of cherrywood but they come in white, black and even have onesthat will fit in the corner. Think about where it will go first and then try to picture it. Also Costcos has a lifetime warranty on all non computor items.

tundra2000

It's a charmglow electric fireplace that heats up to 1500 sq ft, the problem is when i plug it in my basement or garage and it will run for about 5-10 min then it blows the fuse or circuit in the basement or garage. why is it doing this? I would like to be able to use it this winter.
When i first bought it, it worked fine anywhere in the house, but how would i go about hardwiring it into the circuit?

Answer
You are probably exceeding the wattage rating for the plug or circuit
that the plug is tied into.My suggestion, find it a permanent home.
Now hardwire it into a circuit all it's own. Make sure the wattage
and the amperage drawn are within the specifications of the
circuit breaker. Now if you are looking for a heater you can move around
consider one of the family safe electric heaters designed for this
kind of service.

Best way to heat a house in winter?

aol

My family has a 7000 sq. ft house that has three wings, and we need a better heating system for winter. The main wing stays pretty warm...dining room, bookroom, sitting room etc., because of the electric gas fireplace we have installed in the main wing room. The front wing, right off the main wing, keeps warm too, and we have a guest living there. But the back wing, where we mostly stay, can get really cold at times.

There is an old radiator system in the basement that we use, but it costs so much to run! We were thinking about pellet stoves and wood burners, but any other ideas would really help.

Thanks!! Also...any links would be helpful :)

Answer
if you have a fireplace you put logs in there and lite it, it really works, we have two fireplaces in our house and when you lite them both it really livens up the place, i feel like warmth just spreads through me like oven heat spreads through a pie while warming for Christmas supper or like the hot coaco that you have on a cold winter day that just mists up the window! If you don't have a fireplace, go and buy a steel box and lite the fire in there! It definitley works!

The ads say those Amish electric heaters can heat an entire room for almost nothing. So how many Amish fire places would I need to replace my 80,000 btu furnace. I figure I can cut my heating bill in half if I shut off my furnace and use those miracle heaters. Waddayou think?
They call them Amish fireplaces, but they are just an electric heater with a wooden cover.

Answer
"Amish Electric Heater" -- that sounds like a con game. The Amish religion does not use electricity.

I will search that on the internet and be right back to you.

All I could find was "Amish Fireplaces" -- the term (in that case) simple meant "plain Jane"

Heating by electricity is very expensive. It would take about 20 electric heaters @ 15 amps each to replace your furnace. --- That would probably double your present heating bill.

Best way to build a fireplace against a brick wall?

electric fireplaces on clearance on Electric Fireplace Logs Home Depot
electric fireplaces on clearance image

Brielle

One of our walls in out living room is brick and we would like to have a fireplace there. How would you suggest building one? It has a gas pipe hookup but we are also looking at electric ones. My husband can lay bricks, tile, stone, whatever. He can also make a mantel. We would really appreciate any tips or suggestions!

Answer
visit a hearth store, they have many options for vent free gas fireplaces, since you already have the line there its your best option, you can buy them with the mantel or without, if its a zero clearance model it will only produce heat out of the front and so the brick is a moot point. i recently installed one in my living room and constructed my own mantel for it, took me about 20 minutes to install and alother 30 to build the mantel, very easy

Help with a natural gas venting question please help!?

Q. We are finishing our basement and we are going back and fourth between an electric fire place and a gas fireplace. I want gas but I don't know if it can be vented properly. We don't have an existing fireplace so we have to get something called a "zero clearance fire place". Its like the insert that goes into a fire place you just case around it with some sort of decorative casing. Anyhow the only outside wall available to us is underground and under a front window and in a flower bed. It can't be vented up to the roof because... well its in the basement and we can't have a vent pipe going through our living room. How is venting done in this case or can it be done. There is no where else in the basement it can go I'm at a loss. Also the electric fireplaces say they will only heat 400 sqf.....the area to heat is at least 800 square feet. And we live in Canada so we can't get the vent free ones.

Answer
They make a new fireplace that vents in PVC but they are pricey. From what I have seen of them they can have longer runs that would allow you to run it down the wall farther and just box it in.

of our days ,I am looking to buy a energy savings space heater to cut down on my heating costs this winter . I have heard so many mixed reviews on which heater to buy ,can anyone who really knows what they are talking about recommend the best heater to buy
I am leaning towards the infrared modals but not sure if the cost effectiveness that the makers state is actually true

Answer
If you have gas in your home. Get a new efficient gas fireplace. Not only will it save you a bundle on heating cost over any electric space heater but it will give you instant zone heating. It will offer a beautifully aesthetic live flame too. When you are done with the additional heat for the evening you can turn it off without waiting for a fire to ember and sucking the heat out of the home. The fireplaces are also more efficient then your furnace as they supply direct heat. In many areas you can get a vent free gas fireplace..Lowes has them for about $ 500.00. The savings would pay for themselves in 2 years times over the electric units.

Electric fireplace?

Jenny

We bought a beautiful house that is perfect in every way, except for a very ugly fake fireplace. My house is traditional, but the mantel is light oak. Well, actually, it is just about perfect after I have spent 4 years and a lot of money. My last project is the fireplace, and my budget can't take a custom-made job. We are total electric so I don't have the choice of using gas. The electric fireplace w/mantel that I found at Lowe's is made of fake, cheap looking material. If I go through my decorator and her carpenter, it would be perfect, but would cost $6,000 to $10,000. I've done a lot of searching on the web, but I'm confused. I would appreciate any suggestions. My furniture is cherry, some dark antique pieces, and I have a black baby grand, so I need a fireplace that is not only functional but fits with my decor. Thanks!
There is no indention into the wall. They just put Italian marble (strange) where the fireplace would be. It's all flat with the wall. I have a hand-painted screen in front of it, but it is still a useless waste of a long wall. The dimplex is beautiful. Thanks for recommending that. Not sold here, but is available within 200 miles. Such nice people here! Some of the categories have such *angry* people. I was prepared to be insulted. :)

Answer
if you already have a fireplace replace the mantel with one that matches your decor and then just order the logs and a log stand then insert them into your fireplace and plug in when they are on they look real especially if you keep the doors closed a little no one will know we did something simualar but we made a box inserted it into the wall witch backed up to a closet and then we put the screen on and then the logs and when ever any one comes over they think that it is real cause no one looks that close to a fireplace to know if it is real or not good luck hope all works

how good are those electric fireplaces that burn the can gel stuff?

electric fireplaces for sale on Electric Fireplaces, Dimplex Compact Electric Stoves, Electric ...
electric fireplaces for sale image

Rafael

They are on sale all the time but are they worth the $500.

Answer
It depends on what you are talking about when you say how "good" are they.

If you are looking to heat a room then they are not good. If you are looking for a unique style and look then they are great for that.

The gel does not produce heat like a wood burning, electric or gas fireplace could. These fireplaces are really made to be an accent to a home and give it a premium look.

What is the tool used to turn on the gas to a fireplace in a new home?

rayancy32

I have a new home with a gas fireplace with an electric ignition. There is a gas valve built in the wall near the fireplace that uses a tool to turn on the gas to the fireplace. I tried to use a pair of needle nose pliers but they're too short to reach the valve which sits back about an inch inside the wall. The valve is shaped like a hex (male). Does anyone know the name of the tool used to turn the gas valve on and off?

Answer
yes it's called a gas key for homeowners. either go to any building center or to a place of buisness that sale gas fireplaces, hearths, etc.

How can I lower my electric bill!?

Kitty S

I have a direct vent fireplace I have been running a lot in place of my heat. I thought this would lower my electric bill. However, now my bill seems to be even higher! My home is approximately 1300 square feet and my bill is about $200.00 a month.

Answer
Your rates might have gone up like a lot of other peoples. Washing your clothes in cold water will save on the 220 hot water heater. Wash only when there is a full load. Saves on the 220 dryer.
Putting the hot water heater and the fridge on save or normal will help.
Turning everything off when not using saves.
Something over the windows helps to keep the heat in. Curtains and there are plastic kits that can be put on the inside of the windows.
Using the oven the least you can saves. Runs on 220.
Using a tiny night light during the night saves.
People say the curly light bulbs are cheaper to use than the other ones.

how much does it cost to have an electriction check the labels on the breakers in my house?

the breakers in my basement are labeled wrong and are confusing how much will it cost to have an electrition see which breakers control what electric outlet or appliance?

Answer
You could probably do this yourself. I did when I purchased my last home. I simply turned on lights in every room, went down stairs and flipped one switch then checked which outlets and lights went out.
Before hiring anyone, I shop around for best price and try to get a feel for the company. Then I ask myself-what would it cost if I didn't have the work done? I once put off getting a new roof that I thought would last me one more winter...now I have a brand new fireplace, chimney, living room, bathroom wall, kitchen ceiling and roof :- /

We just bought a house and we dont have any experience about the cost of utilities. Could someone please help me in this rtegard?
We are just 2 people and we were freezing in winter time by keeping the temperature from 10 PM till & AM on 60 and 65-68 from 7AM till 10 PM and most of the time we had our wood fierplace on, however we have receieved 3 bills for gas and electric since we moved to our new house. The house is good isolated and there is no gas licking. The oven is gas and gas furnace is well-maintained 10 years old.
The following is our bills for Gas and Electric
Jan : $123 Gas & $33 Electric
Feb: $ 300 Gas & $77 Electric
Mar: $255 Gas & $70 Electric

I appreciate your help

Answer
Be carefull with the wood burning fireplace. If you are using the gas furnace and the wood burner at the same time you are loosing heat up the chimney.

Run the furnace (68-70 degrees) without the fireplace and you will cut your gas consumption.

Wood burners smell great but will cause your gas bills to go up.

How to save on electric bill?

Future Die

My husband and I moved into a house that is all electric. Our old house had gas heat. So far, we HATE electric heat! It doesn't heat the house very well at all. The temp at night has been in the 40's and the heat seems to always run!

We have shut off the vents in the upstairs, because no one is ever up there. The heat is set on 65. What else can we do to save on our electric bill?

Answer
Insulate your attic and basement

Maintain glazing in window panes and caulk around windows to prevent air leaks. Use weather stripping where needed.

Use the damper in your fireplace

Weatherstrip around doors.

Install insulated drapery on your windows. Open drapes in the morning to let the sun in. Close when the sun goes down to keep the warmth inside.

Unplug all electronic chargers when not in use.

Use Smart Strips on all electronic equipment. This is a multi outlet devise you plug a bunch of things into and turn the strip off to cut off the current to all those electronics that are drawing electricity even when not turned on.

Use a Smart Strip in your kitchen for your microwave and small appliances. Turn it off after every meal.

Change all light bulbs to Compact Florescent Lights.

Wash only full loads of clothing in cold water. Do several loads in a row so you take advantage of the warm dryer.

Take shorter showers.

Is your dryer vent air tight?

Are all storm windows down?

I turn my heat down to 60 degrees at night and sleep under a cozy down filled duvet. It is heavenly.

I turn my heat down to 60 degrees when I leave the house.

Watch television in the dark at night.

Moist air keeps a house warmer than dry air. Add humidity to your home in the winter time.

If you are using your oven tonight, bake the potatoes for tomorrow night's dinner. A toaster oven uses less electricity than a conventional oven and I am a convert since a friend cooked some really delicious meals in that toaster oven of his. I now believe in toaster ovens.

Do not be fooled into thinking you are saving money on your electricity bill if you run appliances in the evening. The fact of the matter is that, yes, electricity is being saved, but the savings is only for the electricity company. Your electric bill is one flat rate per usage and it does not change rates according to the time of day you use your electricity. This is a common misconception most people are lead to believe, when, in fact you pay the same rate morning, noon and night.
Yeah, it is wise to use appliances on off peak hours, but it saves you not one dime on your bill.

Non reinforced masonry is a hazard anyplace that is likely to get an earthquake. Removing the chimney is a messy job, but will pay off in knowing that the chimney will never land in your lap when it falls.

whats cheapest to run gas fire or electic fire?

tony

Answer
Gas fire is much cheaper to run than electric. Plus electric fireplaces do not get as hot as gas fireplaces do which, in turn, does not heat a room faster.. Gas fireplaces MAY require a little bit of maintenance (cleaning soot off the logs, the soot coming from burning natural gas) compared to no maintenance of electric (unless the heat element goes out). Gas logs sets usually start at $49.99 and can go as high as $599 ( I haven't seen anything higher, unless its a 40"+ log set ).

Go with gas. Its more decorative, heats faster, and costs less.

is it cheaper to use electricty to have my wall heater on or to plug in a portable heater?

best electric fireplace wall on Warm House Silhouette Wall Mount Electric Fireplace

It is so cold out and I am curious to know if it costs more to run my (not gas) wall heater or to purchase a portable heater. I really want to purchase one of the electric fireplaces that home depot sells, just wondering if it would help save my power bill.
Thank you
I am in Seattle

Answer
your wall heater should be more efficient than a plug in heater. The wall heater is most likely hooked to 240 volts which will use less energy to heat up a room than a plug in 120 volt heater. having insulated walls and attic and "newer" windows will keep the heat in. Check with your power company for windows or insulation, Most areas will pay for some of the work, depending on if your on low income or not. Good luck

Electric heaters for large rooms?

F Strauser

My neighbor heats with electric heaters. He is 73 and somewhat eccentric so he wont consider any other type of heat. He has tried several different kinds of heaters including edenpure, electric fireplaces and the like. But nothing seems to keep the apartment warm. I was wondering anyone has any suggestions on what would work. He lives in a one bedroom apartment, that's approximately 900 square feet.

Answer
We use a Lasko floor cyclonic ceramic heater that sits against the wall, it pulls cool air from the floor and blows it out of the top. They operate on 15 amps at 1500 watts and are digital. It's about like adding 2 HVAC vents in a room that before didn't have one.

That should keep the temperature comfortable.

Ceramic is also very safe and warmer to me then any other heater type. They are also safe.

Wal-mart carries them see the link below.
