is it cheaper to use electricty to have my wall heater on or to plug in a portable heater?

It is so cold out and I am curious to know if it costs more to run my (not gas) wall heater or to purchase a portable heater. I really want to purchase one of the electric fireplaces that home depot sells, just wondering if it would help save my power bill.
Thank you
I am in Seattle

Answer
your wall heater should be more efficient than a plug in heater. The wall heater is most likely hooked to 240 volts which will use less energy to heat up a room than a plug in 120 volt heater. having insulated walls and attic and "newer" windows will keep the heat in. Check with your power company for windows or insulation, Most areas will pay for some of the work, depending on if your on low income or not. Good luck

Electric heaters for large rooms?

F Strauser

My neighbor heats with electric heaters. He is 73 and somewhat eccentric so he wont consider any other type of heat. He has tried several different kinds of heaters including edenpure, electric fireplaces and the like. But nothing seems to keep the apartment warm. I was wondering anyone has any suggestions on what would work. He lives in a one bedroom apartment, that's approximately 900 square feet.

Answer
We use a Lasko floor cyclonic ceramic heater that sits against the wall, it pulls cool air from the floor and blows it out of the top. They operate on 15 amps at 1500 watts and are digital. It's about like adding 2 HVAC vents in a room that before didn't have one.

That should keep the temperature comfortable.

Ceramic is also very safe and warmer to me then any other heater type. They are also safe.

Wal-mart carries them see the link below.

Is it ok to place a wall-mounted electric fireplace in the bathroom?

Will the moisture in the bathroom affect the electric wall-mounted fireplace?

Answer
You will need to have something that is approved for use in a bathroom. That shouldn't be all that difficult as electric bathroom heaters are very common.
The important thing is to make sure you have the appropriate electrical work done.
Make sure that the approved heater is installed in the appropriate manner and that everything is safe.
We don't want anyone to be electrocuted!
If you have any doubts of questions, seek the services of a licensed electrician.
He should know the rules and regulations for this installation and be able to wire the heater in correctly.

Just a thought, this might be a fairly big job... Especially if there is no wiring available in the bathroom....

Good luck.

How come my electric fireplace doesn't stay on?

rainbow

My electric fireplace won't stay on, it turns on briefly then shuts down. The heating coils glow for about 30 seconds then their is a click and it they turn off. It won't work at all for about 5 minutes then I can turn it on and the same thing happens. It does not restart on its own. I did see a small spark in the coil area just before it shut down.

Can you please help me? What could be the problem

The Electric fireplace is attached to the wall

Answer
You most likely have a burned out resistor. They lose the ability to handle the load and have to be replaced.

Do I remove the floor to ceiling mirrors in my l/r, cover them, or keep them?

best electric fireplace wall image

Nina R

I have an entire wall of floor to ceiling beveled mirrors that are in grooved channels and glued to the wall. The whole wall. I just bought an electric fireplace with an oak mantle and it doesn't really go with the mirrors. They were here when I bought the house. Do I remove them, (uh, professionally), somehow cover them up with paneling of some kind, or just leave them there with the f/p in front? help?

Answer
No, have the mirrors removed professionally. With something as classic as oak, the mirrors (very sixties art deco) clashes. And your room need not look smaller. Opposite to the fireplace, if possible, hang a large picture mirror with a frame that matches the rest of your decor. It will still help to open up the room without seeming tacky.

Covering them up is a bad idea. What if something happens to your house and (for example) and electrician needs to get behind them?

I lived in a house once where the entire master bedroom was wall to wall mirrors (guess what the previous tenants' hobbies were) and couldn't wait to get rid of them. I don't think they are the best design choice for a living room or bedroom!

I am decorating a new house in a beach theme. I have a long wall about 20 feet long with ten feet ceiling.?
