what is the comparison with an electric fireplace and baseboard heat?

Em

Which one will impact my electric bill more? How safe are they around small children?

Answer
Even if the fire place has a forced air fan it will probably be good for the immediate surrounding area I doubt it will heat the entire house effectively. Base board heat is usually in every room and the heat is more evenly distributed on a real cold day the fire place would be a good supplemental source of heat. As far as being the main source of heat, not a good idea and the total sum of the base board is going to impact the bill more I would use the fireplace as a supplement only. Although both utilize an element to produce heat the element is protected from direct contact the fire place should be screened so children cant acess it,of the two I would say its the most dangerous.

would an electric fireplace be cheaper to run the electric heat?

i am trying not to have a 200.00 electric bill again during the winter months. thought about investing in a electric fireplace. i live in a 2 bedroom 2 bath 1 story apartment with 2 heating units.i heating unit heats the master bedroom. the other one heats the rest of the apartment.i do not have a themostat. my control settings are normal, cool, and hot. like what you might find in a hotel room. i have done everything i can do to lower my electric bill. my apartment is a electric. so i was thinking about buying the fireplace and put in the master bedroom and not run the heating unit in the master bedroom.will this same me money on my electric bill? my only concern is the fireplace my trip the fusebox all the time.

Answer
Where do you live?

Can you get away with not running the heat for most of the day/night and just adding more blankets & bundling up?

We have just space heaters (don't use the apartment-furnished heating units) for when it gets REALLY chilly...but then again really chilly for us is when it's in the 40's outside! Cold inside is when it's about 60 or so (and that warrants slipper-socks & sweaters).

You will need to make some decisions on how you want to live. You may just need to save money during the summer to compensate the bill during the winter.

Good luck.

what electric, wall mounted fireplace has the most realistic fire?

Passionate

Answer
A very popular wall mounted electric fire is the Be Modern Orlando:

http://www.hotprice.co.uk/2118/5359/products/be-modern-orlando-wall-mounted-electric-fire---flat-glass.html

The Be Modern Orlando is available with a curved, black glass fascia or a flat glass fascia. It features LED lighting which have a selection of colours to represent a real fire.

Alternatively, have you seen the new LCD electric fires? These feature a real image of a fire (like a movie) and some offer a selection of scenes and even sound!

Dimplex make 2 electric fires with the LCD effect:

A new manufacturer of electric fires is Celsi Fires. They offer a similar style of electric fires and the flame effect can be seen here:

Do electric fireplaces really look real?

Richie Ric

The ones I saw at walmart and homedepot look like crap. I looked online and some some from a company called Dimplex that looks pretty real. Has anyone bought one of these? Do they look real? I don't want to be be embarrassed with some piece of crap that I bought online and can't return. Does anyone have any other companies to suggest? Thanks.

Answer
do electric fireplaces look real?...well they kind of do, but the better electric fireplaces are not going to be at a big box store, you really need to visit a specialty fireplace shop. Any shop worth its bricks will carry a good brand that looks more realistic.
Overall though you are not going to fool anyone that an electric fireplace is a real one. They are an aesthetic all their own.
Personally i like the look of them and they are easy to operate but they are not going to fool anybody into thinking they are real.

What setting do you leave your thermostat on in the winter?

Jenn M

My husband and I have an ongoing disagreement... I want the heat on seventy during the day (we have an infant and a two year old and I am a stay at home mother) and sixty eight at night. He wants it on 65 day and night. So I would like to take an informal poll to see what is the average heat setting in the winter.

Answer
73 Day
72 Night

Live in VA.

Went as high as 75 during the 10 degree days/nights.

Did you know the average rate you pay for gas goes down the more you use? Not to say your bill goes down, but the point is, a 1 to 2 degree increase may actually cost you a lot less money than you think.

Look close at your next bill. Works the same for electric.

Incidently, we also run a gas fireplace sometimes too.

My house is 3000 sq. ft. and it cost $300 to heat it with natural gas in December. How does that compare to you? Our furnace is brand new and 94 percent efficient.

What is the average cost of living in Tacoma, Wa?

Chelsea

Just to give you enough to go on, I'm a college student, nineteen, and looking for a studio apartment in Tacoma. I'm trying to figure out if moving out is even in the realm of possibility. My questions are:
What is the average water/electric/gas bill for this area? I've tried looking it up and just can't find the information I'm looking for.

I'm looking up the bus system information as well but if anyone who answers this happens to know off hand how much that is, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm also looking at internet services/phone services too.

Any other expenses I might not have thought of? I've looked into the apartment situation/deposit so I don't think I need information on those.

Answer
Here are some examples for you. I don't live in an apartment but you'll get some idea of costs to compare to.

For a 2400 square foot house:

1. Water - includes water + sewer, and costs me about $110 every two months.
2. Gas - used for hot water heater, gas fireplace in winter and furnace - $30 in summer, $200 in winter
My October bill was $60
3. Electricity - not used for heat, no air conditioner. Usually about $50 per month

Other costs - Internet + phone runs about $70 per month - with discounts when you sign up. Cable TV is about the same. Trash (if not included with your apartment) is usually about $35 per month.

Costs for a small apartment will be much less. Many apartments have trash and water included in the rent.

Tacoma is Pierce County Transit - $2 per ride or $72 per month.
Details here:

Pierce County Transit also connects with the other nearby transit agencies for travel into Seattle or Olympia. Those costs are additional.

ROKU remote problem with fireplace?

garden gir

Okay, Roku remote is changing the settings on my electric fire place. Problem is, the fire place is the entertainment center.

I tried swamping out to a different Roku but that did not work either.

Is there a way to fix this?

Answer
Find your fireplace's remote censor and cover it with tape. Or get rid of the roku and use a computer to stream online videos to your TV. BTW, that fireplace is probably going to cause all your electronics to overheat and die early.

Information/Help on Furniture Piece: Stereo/Bar/Fireplace/8Track?

allisonpec

Greetings â I am hoping you can help or point me in the right direction. I am seeking information on my grandmotherâs entertainment center. I am not sure what to call it or how to research it properly. I am looking to sell it and would like to know more about it and what to list it for.

I believe it was purchased in late 50s/early 60s. The piece has an electric fireplace, two huge doors that open to expose record player, 8-track, AM/FM stereo, pull-out bar, mirrored lit back, and glass shelving. Sides of piece have shelving and crystal lights -- about 7' tall on marble stone bottom. Speakers are covered in red velvet. Everything is in clean, working condition. I have several pictures, including these:

Answer
Why on earth would you want to get rid of that? That is just about the coolest thing I have ever seen. I would suggest taking it to antiques road show when they come to ur area.

seriously All I could suggest is taking some pics to local antiques dealers

Ways to keep warm when the power goes out (and thus the house can't be heated) when you have an electric oven?

Stuck in t

A snowstorm (25 inches) in the DC area knocked out our power for 2 days. We (2 adults, one kid, one dog, one cat) don't have a fireplace either, so our house got steadily colder until we camped out at a neighbor's house. She kept the main floor around 55 degrees (F) by keeping the gas stove going full blast. By the time the electricity was restored and we went back home, it was about 35 degrees (F) in our house.

We don't have a generator and can't afford what's available right now ($800 minimum). We will be making a hotel reservation just in case the power goes out again.

Thanks for any ideas on how to keep warm and safe should the power go out again, as another 10-20 inches are expected tomorrow night.

Answer
kerosene heater sorry to hear your troubles. We got 18 inches here

What would the average utility bills for a one bedroom, one bath loft apartment be in zipcode 72204? ?

Jinx

I've been looking for a good site to calculate the estimated costs of the electricity, gas heating, and water bill on a one bedroom, one bath apartment in Little Rock, Arkansas. My boyfriend and I need an estimate before we attempt to move in. The one we're looking at is loft style with a gas fireplace downstairs and has doors to the outside balcony ( concerned about the door insulation). Help?

Answer
Your looking at about 35.00 for water sewer, estimate 100 for electricity in the summer, If you have natural gas the bill would be around 35.00 in summer and 100.00 for winter, if no gas then figure about 100 on the average for your electric bill year round, (these are monthly costs.)

Summer in this area is more expensive but winter can be cheaper cause it is warmer here. So you might have a cheaper heating bill in the winter to save up for summer. There is always the option to get on the budget plan and they estimate average costs for the year and send you a bill that is the same all year. you build credit in the winter to spend in the summer.

There are some apartments that offer free utilities you might search some of those out if available.

Would you install a gas or electric fireplace?

The_Schwar

Electric: is efficient etc., No exterior vent needed, Cheap.

Gas: keeps you warm if there is a power outage, looks better, more heat.
Wood burning is not an option no chimney. I already have a Propane Foced air Furnance ... So that would be the gas used with fireplace... So the fireplace itself is not the main source of heat. I also have in floor heat in the basement were the fireplace is located. This is mostly a visual thing, but since i live in North Dakota aka "the frozen tundra" when power does go out cause it happens atleast once or twice a winter the alternate heat source is the the pluz i am lookijgn 4 in a gas fireplace.

Answer
In my experience, gas is much better. I've sat in front of the electric ones and still needed a blanket. Gas just has more heat and is more realiable. It's a little more work to have one, but worth the effort, plus it adds re-sale value to your home.

Electric Fireplace vs Central Heating - Cost?

TJ

This winter is a insane- this, we can all agree on. I am fortunate enough to live in Texas, so I can't complain a whole lot when comparing to other states (stay warm out there, everybody!)

That said, I'm wanting to save money on my utility bills, will still keeping warm.

I've been eyeballing some electric fireplaces lately. Since I live in an apartment and don't have a real one, this would seem like an interesting idea.

Now, I do have central A/C and heating. Summer months are a money funnel, but I deal with it and let that sucker run- it gets hot and humid in Texas. I've been reading a lot of reviews and info on how electric fireplaces can cut costs greatly, so I was wondering what the general idea would be on this concept.

Would it be more cost-effective to run an electric fireplace over central heating? I guess in the same respect, a space-heater would do the same in general, but an electric fireplace has more visual appeal IMO.

Answer
If your central heating is resistive heat, then the fireplace is likely to give you nearly the same efficiency. If your central heat is gas or heat-pump, then central heat is going to be many times more efficient.

That being said, if you can turn down your central heat significantly and you use your fireplace to heat a small area, it could potentially save you a little. I can't imagine you would see savings in an apartment unless it is an exceedingly large apartment.

What is the tool used to turn on the gas to a fireplace in a new home?

rayancy32

I have a new home with a gas fireplace with an electric ignition. There is a gas valve built in the wall near the fireplace that uses a tool to turn on the gas to the fireplace. I tried to use a pair of needle nose pliers but they're too short to reach the valve which sits back about an inch inside the wall. The valve is shaped like a hex (male). Does anyone know the name of the tool used to turn the gas valve on and off?

Answer
yes it's called a gas key for homeowners. either go to any building center or to a place of buisness that sale gas fireplaces, hearths, etc.

Where is the best place to find used mobile homes for sale on the web?

whatthehec

Thinking about buying a mobile home, (SE Oklahoma) much cheaper than a house. From looking on the internet I am having a very hard time, when I put something in the search, it brings up all kinds of web sites and none of them are what I am looking for. Any help. Also do the mobile homes, haver real fireplaces or are they electric?

Answer
craigslist ( http://www.craigslist.org ) -- if you're unfamiliar with it, follow the link, find your state, then select your city. If your city's unavailable, select the closest one. Once there, find the section labeled housing, and follow the link labeled "real estate for sale". You can sift through manually, but they may be difficult to find so try running multiple searches once you get there in the search bar at the top. Search for 'mobile', then 'single wide' (or 'double wide' if you're looking for one of those) and 'trailer'. [note: "mobile" will return some results that are way off because it also hits on mobile phone, but eh].

mhvillage - http://www.mhvillage.com is also a good place to run a search.

If your local paper has a website, and posts their classifieds online, you may also want to poke around in there.
