Do Electric Fireplaces still look good after 5-10 yrs of use?

We'd like to install electric rather than go to the hassle of a ventilated gas fireplace, but can't find consumer reports...
The 'flame' looks fine now, but will the 'current' still be good in 5-10yrs?

Answer
The realistic looking electric fireplaces have only been out for about five years. I purchased one five years ago and it looks and works exactly the way it did back then. I have been so thrilled with my electric fireplace, that now I have one in my kitchen, in the master bedroom and in the teen girls room, as well as having a wood fireplace in the living room. I bought dimplex. You wont be disappointed with the electric fireplace, and if you change your mind later, you can always move it to another room.

Hello, I am wanting a electric fireplace and i waited too long i guess. Home depot and lowes?

nursing101

and stores like that are sold out. Does anyone know any places that sell them year around? I live by Dayton Ohio but any stores would be great. Thank you
Well i could call the electric company but we installed solar panels last year so that is definelty helping with my electric. My panels can run the fireplace. But thank you anyway.

Answer
Google "Dimplex". That's the brand HD sells. Look for local distributors and start calling.

What kind of heater should I buy to save money?

I live in a one bedroom apartment with 2 very active cats. I have a large dining room and living room I never use. My question is, what kind of heater would be the safest and most energy efficient to use in one room at a time? I would like to cut down on my utility bill and not use my central heat as much.

Answer
I have 3 active cats and an electric fireplace stove that I can move from room to room. It uses far less electricity than oil or convection heaters. And my cats sit on top with no problem- it's cool to the touch and they can't knock it over. Just make sure that toys don't get knocked up against any heater.

Here's a link with more information: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1900810/electric_fireplaces_and_fireplace_stoves.html?cat=6

does anyone know how long it takes to fit an electric fire?

Holly

i have someone coming to fit an electric fire. i want to know how long it will take to fit because i have stuff to do. thanks
why is there no answers?

Answer
Without knowing all details, it is an impossible question. Even knowing your information - like what exactly is being fitted? A lot of electric fires are portable so take no time at all. It might be you want a coal fireplace and chimney removed that could take a few days.
Even knowing all that - without knowing the contractor nobody can say how long it would take. For example how many men? Do they know your site or might they be surprised and say, we have to wait for an unusual part.
Sorry, but you are the best person to answer your question.

Where is the best place to find used mobile homes for sale on the web?

best real looking electric fireplaces on XTREME POWER (USA) 35
best real looking electric fireplaces image

whatthehec

Thinking about buying a mobile home, (SE Oklahoma) much cheaper than a house. From looking on the internet I am having a very hard time, when I put something in the search, it brings up all kinds of web sites and none of them are what I am looking for. Any help. Also do the mobile homes, haver real fireplaces or are they electric?

Answer
craigslist ( http://www.craigslist.org ) -- if you're unfamiliar with it, follow the link, find your state, then select your city. If your city's unavailable, select the closest one. Once there, find the section labeled housing, and follow the link labeled "real estate for sale". You can sift through manually, but they may be difficult to find so try running multiple searches once you get there in the search bar at the top. Search for 'mobile', then 'single wide' (or 'double wide' if you're looking for one of those) and 'trailer'. [note: "mobile" will return some results that are way off because it also hits on mobile phone, but eh].

mhvillage - http://www.mhvillage.com is also a good place to run a search.

If your local paper has a website, and posts their classifieds online, you may also want to poke around in there.

Anyone here own or have owned an electric fireplace?

moe520_711

I am considering getting one but there are so many different brands out there that it is hard for me to choose. The one I really want is made by "Orleans Furniture". Is that a good brand?

Answer
I have the small one that is black and looks like iron. I stuck it in my real fireplace and I love it. I have saved about $100 so far on my heating bill. I like the inserts you can get and I plan to get one for the upstairs with my tax return.

Fireplace turns on by itself as well as other electronics?

electric fireplaces york on Customlightingfixtures.com, custom lighting fixtures, custom antique ...

Joey Natha

So, I've had a few weird things happen to me before if you look at my other question about idiotic comment's where I posted weird things happened. Now things are just getting weird.

My parents recently got a new house in SW Charlotte, NC by DR Horton. We moved in two months ago it was a big 2 story and I really like the house and school is good. But recently weird things are beginning to happen here. One time I just sit in the living room and we have a gas fire place between two windows with a portrait above it, you have to use a switch on the wall to turn it on; so well one time i was just watching aerial america: New York and all of a sudden the fireplace starts up. It's pretty creepy and it just starts up regularly. When the family sits together, when I'm just passing through, or just randomly. Sometimes when I come home from school and nobody's here the fire place is on or just randomly starts. Then sometimes the microwave turns on by itself. it's really weird.

So is this just an electrical line burnt out or is it something else it is scary. What if something goes wrong and our beautiful house goes up in flames?
It's all new, the Amherst plan Elevation D. By DR Horton North Carolina, Charlotte, Fox Ridge.

Answer
Your parents need to call the builder and get him to check the gas and electric lines. There could be a short as you suspect and it needs fixing before there is an accident.

I'm about to be 18 and I have some questions?

Starla Sul

Okay, well, I honestly don't know how to start. I guess I kind of need like a mentor or something? I don't want to feel stupid but I honestly have no one I can ask these to and I feel slightly over-whelmed. Well, I might as well start from the beginning, I live in Dayton, Ohio and I'm a 17 year old female, and I want to move out by the time I'm 18, and my birthday is in the beginning of June. I have so many questions I don't even know where to start and I'm just looking for someone to answer some of my questions, no matter how stupid they may be.

First of all, does anyone know what places hire people under 18? I know of McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King, etc. I've applied to some of these and never got a call back and I really want to get a job as soon as possible because my parents won't let me get my license until I have one, which I understand completely but I have no way of getting around anywhere aside from walking, which is good for me, but sometimes it's just too much. Btw, I think sometimes I tend to go on and on... Like I'm doing now.
Anyway, how much does getting a drivers license cost? Including everything in drivers ed?
What are some typical appliances/furniture most people have?
With most apartments will I be using gas or electric or both? Add price estimates, if possible?
What is a reasonable price for one bedroom apartments?
Is it better to have a roommate? (I have looked this up many times, and done the math to the best of my ability and I always come up short, going by minimum wage and maximum prices, but honestly this all confuses me.)

I have so many more questions so if anyone could/would help me out reply here or send me an email at: nonya_bizz_nizz@yahoo.com

I appreciate any help. I think I need all that I can get right now.

Answer
You might get a job at Macy's or a place like Marshall's, Home Goods, Hallmark, etc. Also - all the fast food chain restaurants - Denny's, Taco Bell, Dairy Queen, Sonic; coffee shops too.

A driverâs license application will cost you about $10. The eye exam is free at the DMV. You will need to borrow somebodyâs car for the actual exam.
Are your parents buying you a car? If not, you might not be able to get one yourself just yet, because of your credit history (read below.) You will also need insurance - talk to them and see who will be paying about that.

Typical appliances/furniture: I'll tell you the very basic things that you'll need... a bed with box spring, a dresser (or two), a couch, table/desk with several chairs, coffee table and/or side table. You will likely need a microwave, a toaster, some plates, cups, silverware, utensils, knives, a frying pan (if you plan on cooking), tablecloth, trash can, towels, shower curtain and a mat, a laundry basket, a shoe rack, some hangers. You might want to get a TV and a computer. Think about the curtains/blinds.

Apartments usually use electricity for things like the fridge, microwave, washer and dryer, A/C. Most ovens and some fireplaces use gas. My husband and I pay about $180 for everything in a 1,200 ft. apartment in New Jersey (close to New York City.)

I looked at apartment prices in and around Dayton, Ohio for you. You can get a 1 or 2 bedroom for about $500+. Of course there are some cheaper options â like $375 for a 1 bedroom. Check out craigslist.org

Having a roommate - Do you have credit cards or a credit history? If you donât, it might be a challenge renting your own place. You will have to search for roommates who already have a lease. And even then a lot of people wonât be willing to share their space with you. Because you have no way of proving that you are âfinancially responsible.â Even if you have a job - being employed at a certain place for less than a year is not considered as a good enough âproof.â Plus, itâs always nice to share the utilities with someone. Itâs even better if you get several roommates, as there are nice 4 bedroom houses for $800. That means that youâd have to pay $200 for your room. And it could be fun to have some company since you are 18.
I had 4 roommates when I was your age.

You will also have to pay for Internet, TV and phone â that should be around $100 a month for the regular service and about $165 if you want to add the premium channels and some insanely fast Internet (like Verizon FiOs.)
Water is about $30-50 if you do a lot of laundry.

Iâd be happy to answer any other questions that you might have. Drop me a line if you'd like.

i've seen so many people wearing shorts in winter when it's barely in the 50's.

Answer
I feel for you - I am in the same situation. My circuit breaker box went out last night, it was 58 in my condo this morning, and I can't call an electrician until Thursday when I get paid.

I have an electric blanket so I sleep well.

But for the next few days, I'm making it a point to not be at home. I'm working more in a nice warm office, and I'm using my gym membership (which I haven't used in 6 months) so I can be some place with working heat. Consider going to the mall or other public place during the day. Ensure you have plenty of blankets at night and wear something to bed (sweats, socks, etc.)

What is the longest time you have been without electricity after a storm?

Bubast

Hurricane Ike took our lights September 12 @ 11p.m. & they came back on October 2 @ 8:21 p.m.
(Houston, TX)
In 2005, We were only out of power for 8 days after Katrina.
(Gulfport, MS: 2 and a half blocks from the Gulf of Mexico)

Answer
4 weeks... it was after a huge ice and snow storm in north eastern Montana and we lived 50miles from the nearest paved highway.. about 30 miles south of the Canadian border. The electric poles for miles had snapped off in the storm and the electric company had to replace hundreds of them and countless miles of line. So we used a small generator to pump water from the well when we needed it. Other wise we used candles, kerosene lamps. a wood stove for cooking and a fireplace to heat the small house we were in. It was cosy, warm and homey. PLus.. so very quiet.. it is surprising how much noise comes from electric things when they are working. Back round noise really.

what heats better, a gas or electric fire place?

I'm Specia

Answer
Gas for sure!

The efficiency ratings on gas fireplaces are starting to get up into the same range as furnaces now, so it's not like the old ones where all of the heat goes up the chimney.

By the way, that is direct-vent fireplaces I'm speaking of. not vent-free ones. Those are totally useless as a heating appliance and the efficiency is terrible. Not to mention the products of combustion you are breathing with those things. Direct vent units use a sealed combustion chamber to keep the products of combustion out of your home. Most direct vent units will have optional blower fans that help circulate the heated air and further increase your heating "bang for the buck"

Just bought an electric fire - is it cheaper than running a gas fire?

electric fireplaces modern on Luxe Electric Fireplace - Electric Fireplaces: The Best Modern ...
electric fireplaces modern image
Q. Hi, I've just bought one of those "modern" black glass wall mounted electric fires. It is a compromise with my husband and we thought if we went for this one, it would look very nice and as it sits on the wall it does away with the need for the whole fireplace surround/mantlepiece. You can run it just on the flame effect for as cheap as a lamp but I wondered if you had it on for heat too, would it be more expensive to run than a gas fire?
I live in the UK by the way !

Answer
it would be cheaper to run the way gas prices are going your better off getting electric i think you made the right decision.

What color of furniture can I buy to match my mahogany platform bed?

Ozzie

The bed only came with the 2 nightstands, it looks very nice and sleek but I don't know what other color to use. I need a dresser or a 5 or 6 drawer chest for my clothes. The walls in my room are off white. Im trying to keep it simple and modern looking. Maybe a few frames in black/white pictures. Any help. Only serious replies.

Answer
Mahogany can go towards the red or brown shades so I wish there was a picture. There is a bedroom set in black that Ashley has that has a brown wood top and comes in two dressers and a wardrobe that you could try, but it is more cottage style with round feet. I would go black for a modern look. Wicker could go too. The furniture stores have such great deals now it is worth walking through a few and snapping some pics with your phone and holding it up at home. Remember you don't want to just like it - furniture is a long term commitment! Be sure you love it and it suits the storage needs you have. Otherwise, I often think it looks modern and streamlined to do a California closets type of treatment and have no dressers - just built ins. then you can put up some beautiful artwork or a mirror or a tv over an electric fireplace and play up the romance with the added spaciousness. A rug and chair in front of the fireplace is what I did and I love the feel.

which one to choose, a wood stove or a fireplace insert?

electric fireplaces inserts on Electric Fireplace Inserts | Consumer Product Review
electric fireplaces inserts image

I am planning to convert an existing fireplace into a heating source for my home. I would like to determine the most efficient solution: either a fireplace insert (wood - we do not have gas lines) or a wood stove.

Answer
I would go with the stove. Their construction and shape are geared towards maximum recirculation of all combustible gasses making them very efficient with minimal particulate output. I would also recommend the NON-catalytic kind. The catalytic kind have expensive catalysts, like in a car exhaust, that need replacing after a time. The non-catalytic kind have stainless steel tubes in the top of the burner box that recirculate the gasses and burn them. They also make a lovely 'firewash' effect that cause the flames to flow and dance differently without smudging the glass door.

An insert may have some of those technologies too; you'll need to ask/research it.

The stove is smaller and takes less space in your room. It can use the existing chimney as it's flue with an adapter to the stove pipe. Some come with built in fans that circulate the air, or get one of the thermo-electric kind that don't use power and sit on the stove top. You can also use assorted 'steamers' on the stove top to put moisture in the room during dry winter days. Don't think you can do that with a fireplace insert.

Hope this helps!

I mean not the electric one but the real one. Does any body know?

Answer
As long as it's properly vented, absolutely. I've been in quite a few houses that had one. Make sure the you use a screen (wood burner) if you plan to use it anywhere near bedtime to prevent sparks from coming out. Hope this helps.

How much is the average cost of Gas and Electeric for 2 people in 3 bedrooms house in NJ?

nushi

We just bought a house and we dont have any experience about the cost of utilities. Could someone please help me in this rtegard?
We are just 2 people and we were freezing in winter time by keeping the temperature from 10 PM till & AM on 60 and 65-68 from 7AM till 10 PM and most of the time we had our wood fierplace on, however we have receieved 3 bills for gas and electric since we moved to our new house. The house is good isolated and there is no gas licking. The oven is gas and gas furnace is well-maintained 10 years old.
The following is our bills for Gas and Electric
Jan : $123 Gas & $33 Electric
Feb: $ 300 Gas & $77 Electric
Mar: $255 Gas & $70 Electric

I appreciate your help

Answer
Be carefull with the wood burning fireplace. If you are using the gas furnace and the wood burner at the same time you are loosing heat up the chimney.

Run the furnace (68-70 degrees) without the fireplace and you will cut your gas consumption.

Wood burners smell great but will cause your gas bills to go up.

Electric F
