Answer
A very popular wall mounted electric fire is the Be Modern Orlando:

http://www.hotprice.co.uk/2118/5359/products/be-modern-orlando-wall-mounted-electric-fire---flat-glass.html

The Be Modern Orlando is available with a curved, black glass fascia or a flat glass fascia. It features LED lighting which have a selection of colours to represent a real fire.

Alternatively, have you seen the new LCD electric fires? These feature a real image of a fire (like a movie) and some offer a selection of scenes and even sound!

Dimplex make 2 electric fires with the LCD effect:

http://www.hotprice.co.uk/2118/4995/products/dimplex-living-art-wall-mounted-mirror-electric-fire----lva192.html

A new manufacturer of electric fires is Celsi Fires. They offer a similar style of electric fires and the flame effect can be seen here:

How do i make an ugly corner fireplace pretty? It has old brown, dull tiles. Can somebody please help??

If i planned on living here for a number of years, i would just redo them, but we plan on purchasing a house in two years, so i really just want something to quick fix, if its even possible. I will be using the wood fireplace, as it will be cheaper than electric. I need something that won't catch on fire or melt all over the place. Any opinions, and you are a genious! Thank you!

Answer
The cheap way which sounds like your best bet since you planning moving soon, and this is if you wont rid of brown tiles is to use sand paper to rough up the tile and then chose an exterior paint your chose of color to paint over them.

another option would be too, use sand paper and rough up the tile and try to stucco over them, and I would recommend using thinset which is the under layment for tile. very nice looking, and durable.

the other option which is more expensive, but do it your self is to knock off the old tile and lay new, which is not hard, obvisouly you have the internet and you can get step by step instructions. this is my pick, your cost would be 80 give or take.

Thinking of buying an electric fireplace?

Q. who has one and how did you decide on the right one?

Answer
I got one last year at Costco's. I had wanted a fireplace for a long time but since a real one was out of the question I got an electric one. It also has a heater in it that blows out hot air. It was a good price and I didn't have to buy the mantel piece seprately(like I would have had to if I went to Lowe's)the whole thing came together. Its a nice cherrywood and it looks good with my x-mas stockings hanging on it. I like the look of cherrywood but they come in white, black and even have onesthat will fit in the corner. Think about where it will go first and then try to picture it. Also Costcos has a lifetime warranty on all non computor items.

how do i burn a candle tart without an actual warmer?

Jessica H

im wondering if its possible to melt a tart just in a cup with some fire? or do i have to buy a tart warmer? thank u

Answer
They are pretty inexpensive, look in the craft section at walmart. They have some that look like soapstone for under five bucks.

If you don't want it for some reason, you can get a coffee cup warmer, or a jar candle warmer, these are like small burners that you place in the corner of your desk etc that give off small amounts of heat...or you can get a pot pourri crockpot. These are the only logical options I can give you and they all will probably cost more. The adv is that they are electric, instead of having to replace tealights.

You can just unwrap them and place in a non-plastic bowl, in a sunny window, or where the heater is blowing, or on top of a heater or in front of the fireplace.

Is this a good start for a story?

Q. I am 14 and I have more to the story I just want to know what people think of the beginning.

Chapter One

Magic is anything but simple

Winter was approaching rapidly that year. It was only November and yet the air was dry. Will walked briskly up the path to his home, the leaves piled on the sides. Once he got inside he began to ply away the many layers of clothing that covered him.
âWill, is that you?â His mother called from the kitchen.
âYes,â called Will. He walked into the small kitchen and instantly a thousand smells entered his nostrils. A woman with long, curly red hair turned around and Will saw the face of his mother.âI was getting worried about you,â She said with a smile. âYou said youâd be home earlier than this.â
âJamane came in to buy food for the castle,â said Will exasperated. âShe always takes forever.â
âJamane, huh,â said Willâs mother with the smallest of a smirk on her face. âI always thought she was pretty, donât you.â
âSheâs okay looking,â admitted Will. âBut sheâs so pompous and stubborn and sheâsâ¦and sheâs...and sheâs JAMANE!â
âOkay, Okay, thereâs no need to get all worked up. I was only making a statement.â Willâs mother set a plate of cookies onto the small wooden table.
âSorry,â said Will taking a bite of one of the cookies. âWas there a reason why you wanted me to come home early?â
âYes, Aron came over and told me that you need to see him later today.â
âDid he give a reason?â
âNo, but why would he tell me secret information that a sixteen year-old can have?â she said sarcastically, âJust because Iâm not a man doesnât mean that I should be kept in the dark. I mean I was the âmanâ in your life when your father, when your father died.â
Will sighed; his mother had been going on like this since his birthday. âIâm going to see what Aron wanted,â he said getting up from the small wooden table.
âBehave yourself and donât anger that insane skattle of his.â
âDonât worry. Benewen and I get along much better now.â Will smiled and looked at the scar on his arm that Benewen had given him when he was two. In the shape of a W Will was somewhat proud that the only scar he had reflected his name.
Will walked into town and up to Aronâs cottage. He knocked on the door, but there was no answer. âGood, youâre here,â said a grizzly voice behind him. Will turned around to see an old man with short grey hair, electric-blue eyes, and a little fox-like creature weaving around his feet.
âHello Aron. Hello Benewen.â
âThe W begins his name, but someday it will be his fame,â came the sing-song voice of the skattle.
âOkay then,â said Will, he had never gotten use to the way the skattle spoke.
âRiddles are hard to make, but mine are certainly not fake. It is not fun to rhyme, especially all of the time.â
âNever mind him,â said Aron. He unlocked the door and they stepped inside. The floor was strewn with books and old newspapers. There were two armchairs by the fireplace and a small kitchen in the corner, along with two doors on opposite walls. Aron lit the fire and put a kettle on the wood-burning-stove.
âSit down, sit down,â said Aron waving his hand at the two arm chairs. Will cleared the chairs of newspaper and sat down.
âMom told me that you needed to see me.â
âYes,â said Aron giving Will a hot mug of tea. âYour magic test is scheduled for December and I wanted to make sure you knew what you were doing.â
âI have no idea what Iâm going to do, but isnât the test to see if I can do magic?â
âYes it is but you have to know what youâre going to attempt to do.â
âWell, whatâs simple?â
âMagic is anything but simple,â stated Aron, magic was always such a touchy subject with him. âYou have to know the Kragle language thoroughly to be able to make anything happen. You have to know exactly what you want to do. You have to have brains Will!â
âOkay, Okay,â said Will. This was why he didnât like Aron very much; he always got worked up about a lot of things, especially magic. âWell then I guess I want toâ¦umâ¦I guess I want toâ¦um what do you suggest?â
âFor you, I would suggest a decision making charm.â
âOkay, how do I do that?â asked Will, partly laughing.
Aron laughed. âThat one is one of the harder charms. Seriously though, I think that you should try to levitate something.â
âOkay whatâs the word for it?â
âLevitainta,â said Aron. âBut make sure you concentrate and point your finger at the object, like this,â Aron pointed his index-finger at Benewen and flicked it while saying âLevitainta Benewen.â The skattle began to levitate and was hissing and scratching at the air. Will laughed and Aron let Benewen come down.
âBecause heâs master he can do what he pleases but he wonât like it when he gets the sneezes.â Aron smiled at Will and winked.
âCan I try?â asked Will
âTry you may but not on Benewen I say.â
âI think that answers your question,â said Aron with a chuckle. âTry it on that book over there. Say novenaâ
âLevitainta novena,â said Will flicking his finger. The book hovered in the air for a brief moment and collapsed.
âThatâs great!â said Aron astonished and Will thought he detected the tiniest amount of pride in his voice.
âBut it fell right away,â said Will confused and a little disappointed.
âBut it rose,â said Aron. âIt rose because you can do magic. Youâve passed the test and you havenât even taken it yet!â
âI have!? Can you teach me more so that I can ace the test?â
âWork on lifting objects for now and maybe Iâll teach you a little more.â
âThanks,â said Will and he set his mug down, got up and began to walk to the door.
âTell your mother I said âHiâ,â called Aron.
âI will,â said Will and with that he exited the cottage.

Chapter two
Jamane
Will walked home, his mind full of thoughts. Only one child born a year was allowed to use magic when they turned sixteen. Magic users were limited because they had more power than the King! And if Will trained really hard, he may be that one! Imagine him, a lowly shop helper, a wizard! And Aron seemed pleased. Aron, who always seemed so old and angry, yet was treated with the utmost respect, thought he could do it! If it came down to two people, Aron would choose Will to teach!
Will rushed home, gave his mother Aronâs greeting, and went to his room. His room was nothing special. There was a small bed pushed against the wall, a desk, and a dresser with a picture on it. Will walked over to the dresser and looked at the picture. It was a sketch of a man with straight, dark-brown hair, like Willâs, and electric-blue eyes, Willâs eyes.
âIâm going to make you proud dad,â Will whispered. Will was only a few months old when his father died. King Moragon needed men to fight and chose Willâs dad. Three weeks later, Willâs mother had gotten a letter saying that Willâs father had gone missing. Years passed and there was no word of his father. Eventually he was declared dead.
In that time, Aron had moved into town and Benewen had givven Will his scar when he had pulled on the skattleâs tail. For some reason, this memory always made Will smile. Maybe it was because he was now fond of the skattle or maybe it was simply because he liked the shape, the scar had taken.
Will picked a rock off the floor and sat on his bed. Not knowing the word for rock he hesitantly decided to use the normal language. âLevitainta rock,â he said, flicking his finger at the rock. The rock rose a little higher than the book had and fell a little later, and he didnât need the Kragle language! Will tried over and over again until he could lift the rock a foot in the air for a minute. He was going to be the new wizard! There was no way anyone could beat him now, unless everyone else was practicing too. Will hadnât thought about that before. It would be cheating for Aron to only give him help. He must be giving everyone else help too. Especially the Kingâs son, Morganarth. Yes, thought Will. Morganarth would most definitely be given help. But maybe he wouldnât practice. He was, after all, as arrogant as Jamane, if not more. He would think himself to important to practice. Possibly every sixteen year-old boy would think themselves to important to practice. For they were not as poor and lowly as Will. They all had fathers who lived with them.
Will looked out his window and saw the moon was high in the sky. He crawled into bed and instantly fell asleep.
Willâs dreams were filled with wizards, skattles, and Morganarth. He woke up feeling less confident and lifted the stone in the air just to make sure he really could do it.
He walked into the kitchen and ate the oatmeal that was for breakfast. âAre you going to work today?â His mother asked.
âI have to,â said Will.
âCan you give these quilts to Mrs. Kindle?â
âSure,â said Will taking the blankets from his motherâs hands. âI better get going then,â He said and left the house. He got into town and walked into the grocery store. âHello Mr. Kindle,â said Will cheerfully. âMom told me to give these to your wife.â
âAh yes,â said the store owner. âLillian told me to give you this.â He handed a small pouch of money to Will. âMr. Fisher also sold me quite a few fish today and I need you to stock them in the ice patches.â
âOkay,â said Will. He put his apron on and made his way through the crowded shop to the frozen meat section. He began to place the fish into boxes of ice, when a tanned girl of about fifteen came into the store.
âHello Jamane,â came the voice of Mr. Kindle.
âHello,â said Jamane. She looked around the shop and spotted Will. She smiled at him and he half-heartedly returned it.
âWhat can I do you for?â asked the shop owner.
âI need to buy some fish for King Moragonâs supper.â
âLucky for you, we just got some fish in today. Why donât you help her Will?â
âWhat- oh okay,â said Will not looking forward to this at all. Jamane walked over to him, her long, straight, black hair flowing behind her. âWhat kind do you want?â
âWhat would you recommend?â she asked, still smiling.
âThis oneâs a large one, fresh and looks good,â said Will trying to get her out of the store as fast as he could. But instead of her getting up to leave, she bent down and reached across his arm to examine the fish herself. As if she knew more about fish than him.
âIt looks very good,â she agreed looking a little disappointed.
âIâll wrap it up for you.â Will walked over to the counter and began to place paper around the fish. He truly didnât like the Kingâs slave.
In the same war that Willâs father had died in, Jamane had been taken hostage from her country, Shiqueta and had never even been looked for. She was placed in the Kingâs service and was a kitchen maid. She was also betrothed to the Kingâs son, Morganarth.
Jamane walked over to the counter. âSo when do you test?â she asked.
âDecember,â grunted Will.
âMorganarth is testing too.â
âHas he shown any sign of magic?â he asked trying not to get his hopes up.
âNothing, Aronâs been working on it with him but nothing has happened yet.â
âWhatâs he suppose to do?â asked Will intrigued against his will.
âHeâs suppose to lift an object.â
âHmmm. Well there you go,â said Will handing her the package.
âThanks,â said Jamane. âIâll see you around then Will.â
âYea probably, bye.â Jamane gave Will a strange look, almost a longing one and then turned around and walked out of the store.
Morganarth and her would be the perfect couple, he thought. Both arrogant, stubborn, and, (as much as Will hated to admit it, even to himself) Jamane was exceptionally beautiful.

Chapter three
A life not worth living
Will didnât go directly home after work. Instead he went to Aronâs cottage. He knocked on the door, and Aron allowed him inside.
âWhat do you want boy?â asked the old man.
âI wanted to know,â replied Will cautiously. âWhen you use magic, do you absolutely have to say what you want to do in the Kragle language? Or can you say it in our language?â
âMost people have to say it in the Kragle language, but there are a few people who are powerful enough that they can use ours. Why?â
âI was just wondering incase I get put into a situation where I need to use magic, but I donât know the word for it.â
âYouâre getting ahead of yourself there,â said Aron. âYou have to pass the test first. But yes there are a few people who can use magic without the Kragle language, but those people have to be very careful not to do magic when they donât intend to. And I must warn you Will, itâs not just words that control magic, its feelings too. If you feel very strongly, you can do something that you donât intend to.â
âCan you use magic with out the Kragle language?â asked Will not listening to what Aron just said.
âYes, I am one of those few,â replied Aron. He flicked his finger at a book. âLevitate book,â he said and the book rose high in the air.
âAs long as itâs not Benewen lifted, master may show that he is gifted,â came Benewenâs voice as he walked in from the other room.
âYouâre welcome, Benewen,â said Aron smiling and Will laughed. âSo have you been practicing?â
âYes,â said Will as though he had been a naughty child caught in the act.
âI thought you would be,â said Aron laughing and Will looked up. He wasnât acting as though he was angry. âShow me what you got.â
Will looked at the book Aron had just lifted. âLevitainta novena.â He didnât want to show that he could do it with the normal language. The book rose high in the air and stayed there for about a minute.
âExcellent!â cried Aron when the book came down. âYou have been practicing!â
âI can do something else too,â said Will deciding on the spot to show Aron. âLevitate book,â and the book rose again. Aron looked stunned.
âYouâre sixteen right?â
âYes,â said Will nervously. Now he was wondering whether or not this was a good idea.
âMost adult wizards canât do this! For your test though, stick to the Kragle language. And donât tell anyone that you can do this! If word gets to the King, you will never be allowed out of the castle.â
âSecret, secret, secret make your mouth shut and keep it,â said Benewen as he jumped up onto Aronâs lap.
âOkay,â said Will nervously. âI wonât tell anyone anything.â
âYou better get home now,â said Aron. Will got up, scratched Benewenâs ear, and walked out of the cottage.
Will was worried now. At the time, he thought that showing Aron what he could do was a good idea. Now he wasnât so sure. Would Aron tell the King? Surely he wouldnât. He had told Will not to so why would he? But what if he was forced to said a voice at the back of his mind.
If the King found out, Will would become a slave. He would be forced to do the Kingâs bidding. He would have to fight in any wars. He would have to die to save the soldiers. If he was discovered to have more power than the King, he would be like Aron.
Aron came to Arainia two years after Will was born. No one knew anything of his past. He was subjected to take the magic test and passed. The King became extremely worried, for no one had ever been able to perform magic before. The King made Aron move into the capitol, Juna, and become his slave. Aron wasnât able to do much, for he was under the constant threat of death. All he could do was train any new wizards should they ever appear.
Will knew that he had to be careful now or else lead a life that was not worth living.
Thank you to everyone who reads this and I really do value your opinion so please comment so that I can make this better.
The plot that I have right now has many twists and turns but I'm positive that it will only be enough to fill a 200-300 page book if this all works out right, if that.

Answer
Wonderful!! This story had the makings of the beginning of a new fantasy series. It has adventure, turmoil, and a hint of romance (Jamane). You have a very nice writing style that makes the reader want to know more about Will. Your story has good, smooth flow and very informal, thoughtful language. You might want to get more in touch with Will's feelings, though. For example, when Jamane casts a longing look in Will's direction when he is wrapping her fish, you could say that he felt a bit confused or embarrassed. During the part when Will vents his feelings about Morganarth, you could say he was imagining doing some rather mean things to him ("Will could almost picture himself sinking his fist into Morganarth's sneering, arrogant face." or you could say" "Will imagined himself unleashing his magical powers while Morganarth grew red-faced with jealousy.) I think that getting the readers more connected with Will would make the readers feel much closer to him and would make them more willing (pun intended) to follow him on his journey. You did an awesome job and I wish you luck on your story. (I hope your story turns into a book or a series!!! It's sure to be a bestseller!)

Where is the best place to find used mobile homes for sale on the web?

whatthehec

Thinking about buying a mobile home, (SE Oklahoma) much cheaper than a house. From looking on the internet I am having a very hard time, when I put something in the search, it brings up all kinds of web sites and none of them are what I am looking for. Any help. Also do the mobile homes, haver real fireplaces or are they electric?

Answer
craigslist ( http://www.craigslist.org ) -- if you're unfamiliar with it, follow the link, find your state, then select your city. If your city's unavailable, select the closest one. Once there, find the section labeled housing, and follow the link labeled "real estate for sale". You can sift through manually, but they may be difficult to find so try running multiple searches once you get there in the search bar at the top. Search for 'mobile', then 'single wide' (or 'double wide' if you're looking for one of those) and 'trailer'. [note: "mobile" will return some results that are way off because it also hits on mobile phone, but eh].

mhvillage - http://www.mhvillage.com is also a good place to run a search.

If your local paper has a website, and posts their classifieds online, you may also want to poke around in there.

Anyone here own or have owned an electric fireplace?

moe520_711

I am considering getting one but there are so many different brands out there that it is hard for me to choose. The one I really want is made by "Orleans Furniture". Is that a good brand?

Answer
I have the small one that is black and looks like iron. I stuck it in my real fireplace and I love it. I have saved about $100 so far on my heating bill. I like the inserts you can get and I plan to get one for the upstairs with my tax return.

dopeness24

I have a gas fireplace I tried looking up youtube videos on how to start the pilot light but mine isn't the same. There is a key to turn on the gas on the wall and in the fire place there is two panels i can open one has a red valve knob and the other has some electric box thing that has a little knob i can turn on and off. There is also another on and off switch not in the bottom compartment but at the bottom of the fireplace. In the front of the fireplace there is some knob that turns on some kind of fan. Please help thanks.

Answer
Open the fireplace damper. Make sure the flue is free of obstructions and soot buildup. Turn the wall key counterclockwise to open the gas to the fireplace. Turn the red valve knob until it is parallel to the gas line. Light a long fireplace match or use a long log-lighter, holding the flame near the burner-turn the on-off knob "on" until you hear the gas blowing through the logs. The fireplace should ignite immediately. Adjust the flame to your liking with the on-off knob.

What is better and more economical than a wood burning fireplace? gas, electric or pellet?

electric fireplace quality on Amish Fireplace Heater | Home And Family Resource Center
electric fireplace quality image

geewiz

We currently have a wood burning fireplace. We would like to get an insert. Any suggestions as to electric or gas or pellet? What are the pros or cons? Cost? Installer? DIY?

Answer
If you choose pellet, use good quality pellets or you'll pay more in the long run on having the unit cleaned than you saved buying cheap pellets. Quiet and beautiful flames. The big bags of pellets are a con.

If you can do gas, I'd go with that. As long as the unit is outdoors. I knew someone who bought a $2000 gas heater and once it was installed, he realized it stunk the whole house up with a kerosene-like smell. Ugh And it was noisy too.

How much does it cost to build your own house?

Ethan

You do "ALL" the work (electric, plumbing, etc etc)

Answer
Here is a perfect "rough" calculator that you can use to calculate a ball-park cost:

http://www.building-cost.net/

You'll enter:

1. The number of corners the house will have.
2. The total living area square ft.
3. The quality classes of the materials used for the foundation, the exterior walls, the exterior finish, windows and doors, roofing/soffit/fascia, interior finish, flooring, bathrooms, kitchens, and plumbing. Each category can be rated 1 to 4 and there is a description of materials that fall into each class.
4. Is there an attic, balcony, basement, garage, or porch (finished/unfinished/etc).
5. Is it in a housing tract and in a metropolitan area.
6. Central heating/cooling.
7. Fireplaces.
8. What State it's to be built in.
9. What zip code will it be nearest to.
10. The result: Materials, Labor, Equipment, Total.

All in all it's a really neat calculator.

For Minneapolis, MN, a 8 corner house, 1858 square feet using class 2 (good) materials, with an unfinished 929 square foot basement and a 600 square foot unfinished garage, built within the metro area, with central forced air heat and cooling, and no fireplaces would be:

$84,696.00 materials
$10,684.00 insurance, permits, plans
--------------------
$95,380

A builder, on the other hand, would charge an additional $94,897.00 in labor and $27,255.00 in contractor markup for a total cost of $221,710.00

What should i do about my electric fireplace that wont go on?

i got a electric fire place that was in my living room and then it worked for a month or so, and ever since then whenever i turn it on the heater will go on for a second and then it will go off and then the heater will stop working. Do i need a dedicated plug or need to call a electrician to fix this?

Answer
about any kind of electric heat needs its own dedicated power source. Ive had hundreds of service calls over the years over portable heaters overloading circuits. a 1500 watt heater pulls 12.5 amps. A standard 15 amp living room circuit shouldn't be loaded more than 80 percent. That's 12 amps so its overloaded with just the heater running. sounds like you may also have a problem with the heater so get the electrician to check it while he is there installing a new circuit.

is a electric pot belly stove as efficent as the electric fireplaces?

ive been wanting one of those electric fireplaces, but today noticed their really big for my apartment. but they had a electric pot belly stove too, much smaller and would serve the same purpose. the electric fireplaces supposively use about as much electric as a coffee maker. can anyone help me out here???

Answer
The electric fireplace are more for looks than for heating results. You are better off buying a portable heater if you are looking for heating performance.

Where can I find an Electric Fireplace?

My aunt wants an electric fireplace to put in front of her real fireplace. Where can I get an affordable, and efficient at warming a room up one? Walmart? Target? What is the price range and do I need dimensions or is it one size fits all?

Answer
My father put an insert like that in his cobble stone fireplace. I must admit is is handy to start it with a flip of a switch and it put out some pretty good heat. He bought it through a local fireplace retailer.

When we install them out of our shop we put in a chimney balloon to plug the flue first then install the insert and hook it up to the electrical. The installation is pretty simple. If you can lift 40 lbs or so you can DIY it.

Electric fireplace or money?

Kerrie

My daughters birthday is coming up. Shes always said she wanted an electric fireplace so I was planning on purchasing her one. But she also loves to have money and spend it on makeup and things. Which one should I do? I can't decide.

Answer
As a seasoned mom of 4 girls that are now adults I suggest you price the fireplace and make sure it is doable. If so get that as girls and boys have a tendency to use money for items that are not the best choice like ear and body piercings. I also suggest that you tell her when she does go shopping on her own that a receipt is required for your book keeping. This detours the temptation of stealing and you don't need to bring up that word to her.

I rent. My central heat and central air has been broken since February 13.?

electric fireplaces in ontario on The above information is believed to be accurate but is not warranted.
electric fireplaces in ontario image

Jannycakes

My landlord has failed to fix our central heat and air conditioning unit since February 13th. We went with no heat in thew winter. I have 2 children. They gave us space heaters that would cause the circuit breaker to trip and shut everything down with in 5 mins. We own our own electric fireplaces so we used them one in my bedroom one in the livingroom. Very cold for kids to shower in the morning. Now we have no AC. We had a heatwave were our apartment was at about 105 degrees F for 4-5 days. They provided no fans. We had to buy our own fans. We have not paid last months rent or this months rent yet. Not because we are with holding it but because my husband is a contractor. He hasn't been paid yet. We have lived here for 11 years. They know when we have it we pay it ASAP. They have told me there is a specialty part the unit needs. They said it would be ready this week. Now I find out the family member/landlord who deals with that is on holidays for 2 weeks. It's going to be hot here in Ontario. The sister/landlord calls me at 12pm on the day rent is due to ask for the rent. Is it just me or is she insane?? THEY HAVEN'T FIXED OUR STUFF FOR 5 MONTHS. Also the light in the ceiling caught on fire a week ago and my son was terrified. They have don't nothing about that. Just told me to not turn it on anymore. People think I should report this, but since I am afraid we haven't paid our rent yet and that it will upset our understanding for each other when the rent is late, I haven't done so. This is really getting bad though. 5 months no heat or ac. They have not offered to take money off the rent for this inconvienience or pay for the fans we have had to buy. They just keep calling for the rent. Please help me...what would you suggest.

Answer
That place is a death trap. As soon as you can afford it, get out of there. And you need to start saving extra money instead of blowing it so you can pay rent when you have no income. Landlords are only required to supply heat; air conditioning is only an amenity.

First home, what can I expect?

411me

So i just bought a new condo in ontario, closing date is in january. I have been renting for 5 years all inclusive so I have never had to worry about utilities. My condo is a two bedroom, smallish, with all electric baseboards, and a gas fireplace on the main floor. Luckily all of the windows are newer and it seems to be insulated well. I am wondering how I can keep my costs low, for example, should I only use the gas to heat the main level and keep the upstairs low, since heat rises? should i put an electric fireplace in the basement or would it be the same as running the baseboard heaters down there? and any idea on approximately how much during the winter an average electrical/gas bill would be? Just trying to prepare as best I can.

Answer
This is probably apples and oranges but i was installing replacement dampers and chimney balloons in a condo assoc of 500 units in IL and every last one of these 10 yr old condos had electric baseboard heat (what an ill-conceived notion) and two wood fireplaces. Some of the more vocal owners admitted to spending $300-$500 per month on electricity in the winter months in these 1500 sq ft condos. Granted they also were also the ones trying to "supplement" their heat with the wood fireplace (another ill-conceived notion) .

In your case, only use this gas fireplace if it is a direct vent that vents straight through the wall. If it is a gas log unit plug it and forget using it. Even if it is a vent free gas log I wouldn't use it due to NO2 concerns. Personally, I stopped offering vent free for liability sake.

Anyway, with Electric heat the cost will be pretty high, but you evidently have gas service for the fireplace so it stands to reason you can get a direct vent fireplace hooked to it if your current one isn't a direct vent already. Using that as your primary heat source would be good and just supplement with the baseboard heating as needed. Any direct vent heating appliance will trump your baseboard heat so you may want to consider one for the basement.

Electric fireplace blows the circuit breaker?

Can someone point me in the right direction on how to repair my fireplace, I want to try and fix it my self but if i can't i will bring it somewhere, but what could be wrong with it that makes it blows the circuit? It's a small move able fireplace if that help at all.
It will trip the circuit after a few mins, i tried it in my garage with nothing else plugged in and it still trips it.

Answer
1) If it's a new one, take it back.
2) If it's a old one, unplug it.
3) Turn the breaker on.
4) If the breaker trips, the problem is in the house's wiring.
5) If it doesn't, plug it back into the receptacle, WITH IT TURNED OFF!
6) If it trips instantly, the problem could be in the heater or receptacle. If it doesn't trip turn it on.
7) If trips instantly, the problem is in the heater.
8) If it takes a few minutes to trip, the problem could be nothing more than an overload.
Look at the breaker that trips, is it 15 or 20 amps? One of these number (should) be on the handle.
Most heaters uses 1500 watts. A 15 amp breaker (should) be able to handle 1800 watts. That only leaves 300 watts. Now, BY CODE, you are only allowed 80% of the breakers rated capacity. That's only 1440 watts.
9) Is the receptacle on it's own breaker? Or do other items go off when the breaker trips?
If it's on it's own breaker and an old 1500 watt heater, age is taking it's toll on the breaker going over the rated capacity, (by code) and starting to "wear" the breaker out.
Hope this info helps you to "trouble-shoot" your problem.
Good luck in all you do and may God bless.

is heating my home cheaper with propane or electricity?

Sara C

im going to add a heater to heat the bedrooms portion of my house (about 1000 sq. feet) 3 bedrooms. Would adding a propane wall furnace cost less to operate or would an electric fake fireplace be better?

Answer
It depends where you live. In Hawaii electric is around 47 cents a KWh and in Missouri it is around 6 cents. However when the gas/oil went up so did the propane cost and for a while electric was cheaper here. Propane gas kind of has a set price with the whole USA with in a few cents here and there, but electric is different where ever you live. Idaho has the cheapest electric rate so there electric would be cheaper where as California propane may be cheaper.

To run a stove on a 5 gallon size (25 pound tank) will last about 2 months. This is cooking two meals a day for 4 people and running the oven once a week. So it does go a long way I am sure you can ask your sales person about BTU's and how long it will last on the size of tank you have.

If you looked at propane this way as liquid form one eye dropper size of liquid will be 64 times larger in a gas form and will cook about two pots of Top Ramin soup or two pots of macaroni and cheese. It also depends on your altitude as well.

An electric heater can be plugged into the wall where as propane will have to piped in and it must meet building codes and when the tank is empty you will have to take to have it refilled. However if you already have propane to your home it maybe worth you while. to run a pipe a few more feet over to your bed room, and have the truck come out to refill your large permanent tank. The other thing with propane is it will have to be vented to the outside and electric you do not.

They both smell like a dry vent when you first turn them on. A gas heater may last longer where as an electric may need repairs after a while.

If you have the time to research it I am sure you will find that a Geo thermal system will best the best option and then you can have central heating and cooling throughout your whole home. The new systems now days are tax deductible and they are very clean and efficient to use. Here is a web site that you can see if your state offers a program for this system. http://www.dsireusa.org/index.cfm?EE=1&RE=1 Geo Thermal is considered a renewable energy like solar or wind power.

I hope, I have gave you more information then what you asked for. I hope I did not forget anything?

Any recommendations to become more energy efficient?

best electric fireplaces energy efficient image

Megan

As a struggling single mom, I have been making my house more energy efficient. I have started putting blocks around the base of my house, started changing light bulbs, only using necessary ones, using a heating blanket, switched my dryer to exhaust into the house, rather than outside, using a fireplace instead of the furnace, unplugging electronics when not in use, and weather proofing windows and doors. I know there are more ways to save, but can't think of any.

Answer
U R doing good, but watch the fire place thing. That could loose heat if it is an outside wall flue. We built our flue in the center of the house to give off radiant heat all around. It is great. With an outside wall flue U can loose heat.
Instead of electric blanket on all the time only use it to warm up the bed, then rely on WOOL blankets. Put cotton next to skin -- sheets or blankets, and them a couple of wool blankets. Wool is better than polyester or any synthetics. If wool gets damp or wet it can dry quickly with just room temperatures.
Also change diet for cold weather. Eat lots of whole grains like brown rice and buckwheat and fewer fruits. Eat dried and cooked fruit rather than raw, because raw fruits can open keep U cooler, which is great for summer, but not for winter.

If I remove the fireplace doors on my non-working fireplace, is it still wasting energy?

Laura

I have a non-working fireplace. The chimney was closed off when the roof was re-done. I want to remove the fireplace doors, and paint the fireplace so it can still be a focal point in the room, despite the fact that it no longer works. If I remove the fireplace doors, will all my AC (in Florida!) go in to my attic? Or will simply keeping the damper shut prevent that? I want it to be aesthetically pleasing AND energy efficient! Thanks!

Answer
It shouldn't cause the a/c or heat to go into your attic. However, remember that cold air sinks and hot air rises and you are going to leak some air/heat into the chimney stack. My suggestion is this. Take the doors off and see if you notice an increase in you electric bill. I suspect that you won't during the summer, but you may notice a slight increase in the winter because of the hot air rising into the chimney. If you are the type of person who is overly green then you could have a contractor come in and block off the chimney just above the fireplace.

and we want to rent camper big enough and not to expensive!

Answer
There are many state and private campgrounds in NJ. Many of these are closed during the Winter, but most open in March and April, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something nearby. With a camper you might prefer a private campground so you can have electric and water hookups for your camper (not available at state campgrounds). Many private campgrounds rent campers and cabins, or you can lookup RV Dealers to see what's available to rent. State campgrounds don't rent campers but many do have cabins you can rent.

Because it will still be cold with a chance of snow you will not be fishing and probably not canoeing or kayaking (although that can be great fun even in winter, as long as you're properly experienced and prepared). That makes the excellent Cape May area campsites less attractive, because there's not much to do when its cold at the seashore. If it were me, I'd head to the Pine Barrens in and around Wharton State Forest (Hammonton/Chatsworth area). Atsion (on the lake) and Godfrey Bridge camping areas in Wharton State Forest are good if you don't mind carrying your own water and running off battery in the camper. Cabins are available at Atsion. There are also some more isolated camping sites further in the park that are accessible via unpaved sand roads. Wading Pines in Chatsworth is a good private campground in the area.

These sand roads go all over the Pine Barrens and many can be easily traveled by a family AWD/4WD SUV or Pick-Up. Many of these roads are also listed on Garmin and Lowrance GPS Navigation Systems (not TomTom, and I don't know about others). Driving the sand roads looking for ghost towns (now just bare spots next to the road), building ruins, wildlife, geocaches, and the Jersey Devil are popular activities. There are some tiny but nice beaches along some bends in the rivers and streams in the area that are good for a picnic (or a quick swim in warmer months).

If you are willing to go farther then NJ than I would head to Florida for the warm weather and beach, but you'll be competing with all the college kids and their ideas about Spring Break. I prefer the Western and Southwestern states myself: Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada; but these are too far for a one-week trip. You can also go to PA or upstate NY, but in the Spring I don't think they have more to offer than NJ.

Staying in a camper is a lot like staying in a vacation cabin or bungalow. Besides the normal stuff (clothes, soap, shampoo) you'll need to bring your own towels and flip-flops for the public bathrooms/showers, your own toilet paper, plus all your own plates, cups, napkins and utensils for eating. You might also need to bring your own pots, pans and cooking utensils. Of course you'll need food and drinks and condiments, but you'll also need dish soap, sponges, scrubbies and paper towels. Coolers for food and beverages and a small propane grill, and maybe 2-burner camp stove for cooking outside. Folding table and chairs to eat on if there's no picnic table. Lanterns and flashlights, too.

The camper (or cabin) will usually have some sort of heat (furnace in the camper, and furnace or fireplace in the cabin). You'll need to charge the battery every day or so (by hooking to the car and allowing to run until charged) to run the furnace and the lights in the camper if you don't have electrical hook-ups, and make sure you don't run out of propane. But that means you only need a normal sleeping bag (not a cold weather one) or a bedroll made of blankets for sleeping, plus your pillow (and teddy bear).

If campfires are allowed you'll need to bring your own wood, kindling and tinder (or make kindling/tinder on-site) for the fire. Don't forget hot dogs and marshmallows to roast over the fire.

Of course lots of trash bags because you have to keep a clean campsite, carry out all your trash (or place in dumpsters if provided), and put your dirty clothes in something.

For clothing you need clean underwear and socks for every day, but can wear the same pants and shirt for two or more days (hey, this is camping, not a luxury resort!). Also bring a sweater or sweatshirt and sweatpants in case it gets cold, and a warm jacket, hat and gloves. Thick socks and good hiking boots or shoes are recommended.

Binoculars, fishing pole and tackle, GPS for geocaching, camera, magnifying glass are good ideas. Each person should carry a full water bottle, brightly-colored bandanna, signal whistle, flashlight energy bar and a few other emergency items just in case something happens while out on the trail hiking or something.

That's the basics. I could go on for pages but I think you get the idea. Ask more questions if you think of them.

(BTW, I've stayed at dozens of KOA's across the country. Most are good, some are very good, but many are so-so and some downright awful. In any case, there are no KOA's in NJ.)

What is the most realistic looking electric fireplace?

ndsino

I know there are many types of fireplaces, but I'd like to find the most realistic electric fireplace I can. I don't want it for the heat -- just for the look. We live in a warm area, so really don't need the warmth of the fire. I also have a budget of less than $1000. What would you recommend?
I should also add that we prefer a more classic look rather than a modern, trendy look. You know, something like you'd see in an old living room all decked out for Christmas -- stockings hung on it, etc.

Answer
Cool summer evenings, crisp autumn mornings, and winter's many frosty days provide perfect opportunities to cozy up with Dimplex's traditional-style electric fireplace. Featuring a roomy 20-inch firebox opening, realistic glowing logs, and a patented 3D flame feature, this handsome room accent creates an elegant fire look without the dangers of smoke, an open flame, propane, or gas emissions. The unit's fan-forced heater distributes heat quickly and evenly throughout the room, while its thermostat control makes it easy to maintain personal comfort levels. The fireplace can also provide a glowing fire without the heat for visual enjoyment year-round. Concealed controls provide a clean look and the included remote control allows for easy adjustments without having to leave that perfect spot on the sofa. Classic in design, the fireplace offers a rich burnished walnut finish, graceful embellished molding, and a generous mantel for photographs, vases, or other personal touches. It measures a space-efficient 36-3/4 inches wide by 36 inches high by 11-3/4 inches deep to fit nicely into rooms large and small.

Air to air heat pump..is it cost effective in North Carolina?

My husband and I are moving to northern North Carolina this coming September, and we will more than likely be buying a house.. We both grew up in NJ and are used to gas heat..I know electric heat can be very costly in certain areas of the country..will an air to air heat pump in NC be costly as well...or would it be cost efficient? It seems that all the homes in North Carolina are air to air heat pumps, and not gas.. I appreciate all advice, thank you!

Answer
I live in northern NC too, most houses around here have natural gas heat. In fact, most of my friend's houses in surrounding towns have natural gas heat too (and its weird because the ovens are electric not gas)

Sorry I don't have a direct answer for this, just wanted to chime in here with a thought for you .. I moved from NY to NC 7 yrs ago and my suggestion would be for you to rent first for a year before buying a house outright, especially if you haven't lived in NC before. The climate is SO different here than in the northeast, your real money spent will be in air conditioning not heating imo. During the winter here I only need heat on at night because I'm ok with it being 69 indoors, but I run the a/c all day long during the summer because even with it running at full strength it gets up to 80 degrees inside from the direct sunlight. (Yes the air conditioning unit is working properly). Plus almost every newer house here has a fireplace (which I have only ever felt the need to use like one time in the past 5 years) If you rent for a year before buying you will have a much better idea of what kind of bills to expect and what your comfort level is, so you can be better informed about what you think you may need in your actual house. Plus youll get to know the area better before buying up property! The winters are usually very mild here, but the summers are brutal. Good luck!

I co

Tips and links would be much appreciated! If you have any personal experiences or ideas about how to make an apartment feel less temporary and more like a home I would love to hear it. I have some ideas but I've been feeling blocked. I spent the last few months wanting to move so badly. I gave up on making anything exactly the way I want it because I figured what's the point if we'll be moving eventually anyway? I want to love where I live so much I will be able to bring that warmth with me when we do eventually move. Even if we do move I won't feel any different if I can't be thankful for what I have now.

The absolute cheapest way to make an apartment feel like a home is too paint the walls. You'll have to get the landlords permission though. Yes, I was told to only use light colors. :( But I soon found out that light colors make for an interesting backdrop for many different decorating styles. I found out from using light wall colors that I actually love Shabby Chic, and French Provencal Styles. Remember paint is cheap so who cares if you can't take it with you, so focus on what can be taken with you. Curtains, furnishings, etc. I hated the light fixtures that were here. I changed most of them out, to my styles but kept the old ones stored in the basement, because when I move, I can re install the ugly ones and take mine with me. Just kill the power at the fuse box to avoid giving yourself a shock. Install the new fixture during the daytime as like I said power will be shut off till you do the switch out. Don't just turn the lightswitch at the wall off, cause some of the older buildings have the light fixture wires hardwired into the electrical sockets on the walls. So from personal experience if you don't want a shock turn the fuse panel off. (Pull the fuses). Like I said think about furnishings as your color sources to make it feel homey. Cushions are a good example, curtains, even shower curtains, (and yes you can install them to hide shower doors as well). If you feel the need to give the extra touch to wall treatments and have the landlords permission then you can use borders on walls and you could stencil. Some landlords will let you wallpaper as well as long as it's removed when your ready to move out. However, the wallpaper can't be taken with you. Also even if it's a rental who's to say you can't accessorize the outside area as well. I have a porch and I have put a wicker rattan bench out there, with some wicker tables and some nice potted plants. I asked the landlord about a small garden to which he said yes as long as it was on my side. I found out a garden was impossible bc of an existing foundation that was left behind from an old building. So I thought about it and bought the kit for a raised garden bed. At homedepot in the states and filled it with my own ground to plant flowers. (Again the raised garden bed can come with me when I move all I have to do is disassemble the wood pieces and take it with me). Yes the ground gets left behind but who cares, its just ground. The plants can be dug up and replanted when I move as well. (Because it's all temporary). So have fun decorating and making your space feel like a home. Another way if you like fireplaces, buy an electric one and you can place it in whatever room you want and take it with you as well. Or even the electric woodstoves.

How to save on electric bill?

Future Die

My husband and I moved into a house that is all electric. Our old house had gas heat. So far, we HATE electric heat! It doesn't heat the house very well at all. The temp at night has been in the 40's and the heat seems to always run!

We have shut off the vents in the upstairs, because no one is ever up there. The heat is set on 65. What else can we do to save on our electric bill?

Answer
Insulate your attic and basement

Maintain glazing in window panes and caulk around windows to prevent air leaks. Use weather stripping where needed.

Use the damper in your fireplace

Weatherstrip around doors.

Install insulated drapery on your windows. Open drapes in the morning to let the sun in. Close when the sun goes down to keep the warmth inside.

Unplug all electronic chargers when not in use.

Use Smart Strips on all electronic equipment. This is a multi outlet devise you plug a bunch of things into and turn the strip off to cut off the current to all those electronics that are drawing electricity even when not turned on.

Use a Smart Strip in your kitchen for your microwave and small appliances. Turn it off after every meal.

Change all light bulbs to Compact Florescent Lights.

Wash only full loads of clothing in cold water. Do several loads in a row so you take advantage of the warm dryer.

Take shorter showers.

Is your dryer vent air tight?

Are all storm windows down?

I turn my heat down to 60 degrees at night and sleep under a cozy down filled duvet. It is heavenly.

I turn my heat down to 60 degrees when I leave the house.

Watch television in the dark at night.

Moist air keeps a house warmer than dry air. Add humidity to your home in the winter time.

If you are using your oven tonight, bake the potatoes for tomorrow night's dinner. A toaster oven uses less electricity than a conventional oven and I am a convert since a friend cooked some really delicious meals in that toaster oven of his. I now believe in toaster ovens.

Do not be fooled into thinking you are saving money on your electricity bill if you run appliances in the evening. The fact of the matter is that, yes, electricity is being saved, but the savings is only for the electricity company. Your electric bill is one flat rate per usage and it does not change rates according to the time of day you use your electricity. This is a common misconception most people are lead to believe, when, in fact you pay the same rate morning, noon and night.
Yeah, it is wise to use appliances on off peak hours, but it saves you not one dime on your bill.

What is the best thing to do when there is an earthquake?

Answer
The most important thing to do is to remain calm. If you are inside a building stand in a corner or under an interior doorway, or under sturdy desk or table. Engineers actually approve of the idea of standing in an interior doorway- it is not just a myth. Avoid windows, fireplaces, large mirrors, and tall furniture. Stay clear of heavy machinery that may fall over. Do not get into an elevator. If you are outdoors, or near an exit move away from buildings and power lines that may fall. As long as your are in a structurally sound building, it is probably better to stay inside. If you are in an automobile stop in an open area away from overpasses and power lines. When driving, the shake of an earthquake will often feel like something is wrong with the car and may not be apparent. Stay away from beaches.

Immediately afterwards, be cautious about possible broken power lines and gas lines, and check to see if people are okay. Do not use the phone unless it is an emergency because if they are working, the lines will be jammed and need to be left open for emergency calls. Turn off the utilities like water, gas, and power to buildings if there is any chance of damage.

If you live in an earthquake prone area these are some easy things you can do to make your home more earthquake proof:

1. Find out if your homeowner's insurance covers earthquakes.

2. Be familiar with how to turn off your natural gas, water, and electric utilities. Consider installing an "earthquake valve" on your natural gas line. This type of valve shuts off automatically if there is shaking. It could prevent your house from burning down. Here are a few:
http://www.earthquakestore.com/gas_shut_...

3. Brace your water heater with at least two metal straps tied to a major wood stud or anchored to a concrete wall. The straps should be anchored with a wide angle extending laterally about two feet on each side of the water heater, if possible.

4. Install child-proof type latches on your overhead kitchen cabinets and other cabinets where things might fall out.

5. Anchor the top of tall furniture to a wall using a strap and anchor, or an angle bracket secured to a stud in the wall. Hanging pictures should be hung from hooks secured into studs.
Move chandeliers, tall bookshelves, and large mirrors away from beds. By the time a sleeping occupant has realized the earthquake is happening the hazard may have already fallen on the bed.

6. If you have an antenna attached to a masonry chimney, move it. Masonry chimneys should be checked and tuck-pointed if the mortar has begun to deteriorate. Be aware that masonry chimneys are very likely to shake apart in an earthquake.

Preparedness:
1. Be prepared to live without power and water for at least 72 hours. The water heater and toilet tank will supply up to 45 gallons of water if they are not damaged. Having a water purifying filter on hand is always a good idea. These camping type filters are the ones I recommend but either water purification tablets or those household water filtering kits are suitable:
http://www.rei.com/online/store/search?n...

2. Have a battery operated radio on hand, or even one of those self-powering crank units.

3. Flashlights and batteries are essential.

4. Don't expect the telephone, either land or cellular to work. If they are working, avoid using them except for emergencies as they will be overloaded.

5. Be prepared to live outdoors, preferably in a tent while there is risk of an aftershock. If your house is damaged seriously it may not be safe to re-enter.

6. Have a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit on hand.

7. Have a family plan, and plan ahead who will be responsible for helping elderly or children out of the house and the route. Know your neighborhood and the skills of your neighbors. If there are doctors or other emergency personnel in the area know how to contact them. If your family is spread out, have someone out of the area for everyone to check in with. Long distance calls will be easier than local calls.

8. Make some plans for your pets. Many pets get confused during earthquakes and get lost.

9. Keep a small camp stove handy, or at least some canned food and a manual can opener. Eat the food in your refrigerator first, then the food in the freezer. An unopened freezer will last about 3 days.

10. Apply the same concepts to your workplace. Know how you will contact the rest of your family if at work. Many emergency personnel have their entire family carry a small CB-radio because they realize they would not be able to function properly if they were uncertain about the status of their family.

11. Stay off the roads unless it is an emergency. Try to leave roads open for emergency services like ambulances and fire trucks.
