Any one out there ever buy an electric fireplace?

Atsa me At

for your home? Not an insert. Which did you buy? I would like to get one that has a large open face so I can see more of the flame..a no headache one...seems everything you buy anymore, if you don't know the correct questions to ask the sellers, they don't go out of their way to warn you of potential problems/hazards, well of course not they want to sell their items...thank you.

Answer
I wouldnt buy an electric if your looking for heat. They are stictly for looks. Sales guys will tell you "OH and it does 3000 or 5000 BTU" If you have a $30 space heater from Target that sits under your kitchen table, then you know how much heat that is. That will heat your bathroom after some time and thats it. All they put in them is a cheap little space heater. If your looking for something large to view Lennox makes the best one on the market but they charge for it. You will spend $2-3000 just for the fireplace and with 220v it will do 10,000BTU with 110v it just does 5000btu. But at that price I would just go for gas or wood, because you still have to purchase a full surround mantel. It def. looks the best out of all though because it doesnt use just standard lights. Other wise all the other brand are just cheap little boxes with lights in them with a 20 dollar space heater. Heat Surge claims to be Amish, but when purchased look on the back and you will see MADE IN CHINA, it's all chip board, Amish don't use chip board, so if the sticker is missing thats proof rite there.
I just recommend pick the one you think look the best, just don't plan on purchasing it for heat. And I would not leave the heater on for long times. Leaving just the fireplace on is just a 60W. bulb but with the heater at the same time you have about 1500w an hour

Do gel fireplaces produce heat?

wiccangal

I was thinking about getting an electric fireplace. However, I live in a mobile home and I am not sure about the wiring because it is pretty old. I like the idea of a gel fireplace too, but does it produce heat? Is it safe, does it cause fumes and does it run at all on electricity?

Answer
There are literal 100's of eclectic fireplaces that are on the market today to choose from.

They have them with a nice wooden mantle and some that even look like wood stoves.

They have an electric fan that throws out the heat and fake logs and lights to make them look real.
I bought the wood stove type for my bedroom because I live in a log home so it looks nice.

Mines throws out lots of heat and I am very happy with it.

They are very safe, affordable and look great.
To make mine look more real I added some small real logs to the exciting ones. It turned out looking great.

I would not use anything in your home with old electrical wires. Either have the electrical wires completely replaced or buy one of the new ones I describe.
There are always lots of these for sale in my local newspaper where people are moving and don't need them any more.

Also in just a couple of weeks there will be lots of these new and on sale after the holidays. In January all of these types of things are on sale to make way for spring items.

Be safe and good luck.

how good are those electric fireplaces that burn the can gel stuff?

electric fireplaces for sale on Electric Fireplaces, Dimplex Compact Electric Stoves, Electric ...

Rafael

They are on sale all the time but are they worth the $500.

Answer
It depends on what you are talking about when you say how "good" are they.

If you are looking to heat a room then they are not good. If you are looking for a unique style and look then they are great for that.

The gel does not produce heat like a wood burning, electric or gas fireplace could. These fireplaces are really made to be an accent to a home and give it a premium look.

What is the tool used to turn on the gas to a fireplace in a new home?

rayancy32

I have a new home with a gas fireplace with an electric ignition. There is a gas valve built in the wall near the fireplace that uses a tool to turn on the gas to the fireplace. I tried to use a pair of needle nose pliers but they're too short to reach the valve which sits back about an inch inside the wall. The valve is shaped like a hex (male). Does anyone know the name of the tool used to turn the gas valve on and off?

Answer
yes it's called a gas key for homeowners. either go to any building center or to a place of buisness that sale gas fireplaces, hearths, etc.

What to look for when viewing a short sale home?

Shelby

I am looking at buying my first home. I was shown a house yesterday that is a short sale and I am very interested in putting in a offer. I am going to look at it again later today and I will be taking my brother along with me, he has worked in construction for 15+ years and works with a well-respected remodeling company in the area. I want him to give me his opinion on the condition of the house.

The house has been vacant for at least 6 months and was built in 1940, with some add-ons, and the yard is overgrown, some of the gutters are fallen off, and the electric connection from the telephone pole to the house is hanging off the house. On the inside it is dirty at first, the people just left, food still in the fridge, so that odor is nice. I looked at the ceiling and did not see any water damage. Come of the windows look new, some need replacing. It has a wood burning fireplace, with burnt logs still in it, and I have no experience with fireplaces. If it has gone without maintenance for so long, is that a costly fix?

I guess my question is, what should I look for as signs whether to back away from this house or to move forward? I know my brother will be looking at the roof and basement and furnace and stuff, but I want to know what I should be looking for myself. Thanks!

Answer
A short sale is no different than any other house... make the contract subject to an acceptable home inspection. (You will pay for the inspection but it is well worth the price in a case where there may be problems with the house).

Where is the best place to find used mobile homes for sale on the web?

Thinking about buying a mobile home, (SE Oklahoma) much cheaper than a house. From looking on the internet I am having a very hard time, when I put something in the search, it brings up all kinds of web sites and none of them are what I am looking for. Any help. Also do the mobile homes, haver real fireplaces or are they electric?

Answer
craigslist ( http://www.craigslist.org ) -- if you're unfamiliar with it, follow the link, find your state, then select your city. If your city's unavailable, select the closest one. Once there, find the section labeled housing, and follow the link labeled "real estate for sale". You can sift through manually, but they may be difficult to find so try running multiple searches once you get there in the search bar at the top. Search for 'mobile', then 'single wide' (or 'double wide' if you're looking for one of those) and 'trailer'. [note: "mobile" will return some results that are way off because it also hits on mobile phone, but eh].

mhvillage - http://www.mhvillage.com is also a good place to run a search.

If your local paper has a website, and posts their classifieds online, you may also want to poke around in there.

Approximate cost to convert garge to small house?

YahooDeana

Assuming the city approves it, this is a 2 car detached garage approx 50 feet from the house.
I want to put in a 3/4 bath and small kitchen (electric stove). There's lights in the garage but no heat. I assume electric heat is easiest to use.

Answer
Well if you are going to pay someone it could cost quite a bit of money, but doing it yourself you can make a damn nice one for around 10k. Built one for a mother in law suite in the end it was about 10k but bare in mind this was decked out with premium appliances crown molding and a fireplace. If you want a simple thing it would cost around 5k if you do the work yourself. But you have to be smart about it, plan it for a year and start buying what you need when they go on sale.

What GREEN Product that you will install at home ?

electric fireplaces for sale on ... NEW HOLLYWOOD ELECTRIC FIREPLACE - $249 in Toronto, Ontario For Sale
electric fireplaces for sale image

Leona

I saw a article online regarding few of Green products that all family should install at home..
Solor Panel, Bidet4me bidet seats, water filter, etc.. so what other you recommend ?

Answer
Here are energy-saving steps that I've taken during the past six months:

- Replace 29-year-old conventional water heater with a tankless water heater
- Insulate attic (formaldehyde-free fiberglass)
- Replace most CFL bulbs with LED
- Added foam covers under light-switch and outlet covers
- Pop outlet plugs into little-used outlets
- Spray foam insulation around kitchen sink pipe opening
- Foam cover for exterior spigot (for garden hose)
- Replace most batteries with rechargeable ones
- Close heat / air vent in guest room when it is not in use
- Dust soffit vents (outside the house, under the overhang)
- Started making some green cleaning products for home and body (e.g. use 1 teaspoon soap, a few drops of essential oil and 1 cup of baking soda plus a little water to make a paste to be an effective bathroom cleaner, instead of bleach)
- Install electric fireplace (not sure if this will lower energy use -- gas central heating; seems like it would, but it's too early to tell)

On the to-do list:
- Caulk around window drafts
- Cover floor register grills
- Continue to upcycle old pieces from storage and estate sales. For example: My old metal drying rack had a bottom shelf that fell off and would have to be welded back on. I didn't use it, but it's pretty, so I'm going to hang it on my kitchen wall and tie my aprons to it for decorative storage.

PS - You sound like you work for Bidet4me. Didn't have a problem spelling "bidet," but you misspelled "solar"...

I want to get an outdoor fireplace for my newly redesigned patio. Help?

Jessica

Any suggestions? Brands? wood vs. electric? Size recommendations?

Answer
I don't think you need to spend much money or buy new on this. I have a number of outside fireplaces (big yard) as follows:

Old woodstove, got it at a yard sale for $20.

Two chimeneas, one huge iron one, came from the estate of a friend, the other is a mid sized ceramic, yard sale for $10.

One antique french woodstove/fireplace, given to me by a friend when she moved.

One firepit, about 3' x 1', appears to be one end of a huge old barrel or tank, was on property since I was a kid.

All of these burn wood, one advantage of wood burning outdoor fireplaces is the smoke keeps the bugs away. You do want to be sure they are not burning under or near anything that can catch fire.
